Hello my fun loving friends! Are you wondering from the title of this post what the heck you’re going to see? Well, it’s not an unusual piece. It’s actually darling. I’ve just placed it in an unusual room. So, you may scratch your head and think it’s weird but I love it! Plus, you’ll understand why I couldn’t pass it up when you hear how much it cost!
You may scratch your head and think it’s weird but I love it!
Vintage hutch needing some love. See? Not weird at all!
A couple of weekends ago, before mother nature decided to burn Texas into oblivion, we went to an antique store closing sale. It was truly meant to be. My bestie texted me early on Saturday and I was actually already awake. That alone is a miracle. I love my slumber. Then she texted me a photo of a vintage metal bed she got for five dollars and mentioned a going out of business sale only 20 minutes away.
I plan on replacing the knobs to make them even.
Cheap prices on any kind of antiques or junk will accelerate my morning routine like nothing else.
Technically, there was no morning routine. I brushed my teeth, put on the clothes I wore the day before and realized later I had forgotten to brush my hair. Oh well, if anyone there was looking at me and not the merchandise, they had other issues. I doubt I’d ever see them again anyway.
Now I have a place for books, more china and extra accessory storage!
On to the good stuff! As soon as I walked into the main building this hutch was sitting by the door. The sweet lady walking around answering questions said everything was marked and it was half off the ticketed price. The original tag said $469.00. Even with my lack of math skills I knew I wasn’t paying half of that for a large piece of furniture I had no place to set.
And a place to house more of my vintage blue bottle collection!
I walked around to look at what was left. The twin pink doors were sold. The silver tea set, sold. The corbels, columns and vintage patio furniture, sold. I didn’t want the awkward looking mannequin or the weird dolls and even though I could have purchased a beautiful set of china, I refrained. Honestly, I have no where to store anything more.
I was about to start digging around in this little back room, when I passed the hutch again. Then I noticed a different tag on the opposite side of the hutch. It said $100. So did someone else. Fortunately for me I knew which lady was answering questions and which one was working the register so I quickly ran over (kicked a literal can while tripping over a frame) and blurted out – I want the hutch!
Just as I was looking for the mister to announce my steal of the century, I heard another woman ask if she could buy it. I nearly got whiplash turning to see what the check-out lady was going to say. Thankfully, she had my back and walked over with a sold sticker and a wink. I was so excited!

A few minutes later, I paid the lady $50.00 and the mister packed it in the truck. We were both wondering where it was going to live. Then my daughter said why not put it in the living room between the gray checked chairs. She must take after me with her smarts, frugalness and out-of-the-box-thinking.
I know you may scratch your head and think it’s weird but I love it!
I know it looks a little wack but I’m a little crazy already. Maybe I’m starting a new trend?! Maybe everyone is going to want a vintage hutch (btw, they said it’s from the late 50’s, early 60’s) in their family room? You never know. Just wait until I decorate it with Christmas goodies! Yep, I’m one happy girl. If you can’t remember what that wall looked like before the hutch arrived, click here. Anyone else seen one like this? I’ve tried Etsy but have had no luck.
Love it! And it looks perfect where it”’s standing proud.
Good steal…don’t you just love finding a great deal?
Enjoy….can’t wait to see how you decorate her for Christmas.

Thank you so much Cynthia and yes, I love finding a great deal! It’s a nice feeling. Especially when I purchase something I really don’t need. 😉
So lucky to have these types of exciting sales and deals pop up. Here in Canada we are so limited to such finds and to very greedy vendors so our “finds” are extremely far between. Love the hutch and I know it will look amazing at Christmas!

Maybe it’s just me but I think it’s hard to find certain antiques here in TX. Like ironstone. But a friend in Kentucky finds it all the time. Such miniscule battles, right?! LOL. Thank you Robin
Round top Texas 2x year
Wear comfortable shoes and bring a truck
Amazing finds
Author
Girl, I am there almost every year – both seasons – with a truck! 🙂
That is an awesome find! I think it fits perfectly between the chairs…good job!
Author
I appreciate that Marcie. Thanks so much!
Love the new vintage hutch! They are essential for those vintage decor treasures!!!
Author
Oh my goodness, I can’t believe my eyes! Did Jenny Lyon actually read and comment on a post?! I’m so excited!!! And it makes me feel better that such a big piece is “essential”. Thanks bunches!
Oh you did great, I am so excited for you. That is such a wonderful piece and can’t wait to see it decorated for the different seasons. You will have so much fun with this cutie. Happy day!!!
Author
I’ve never had shelves (like bookshelves) to decorate before. I’m trying to refrain from filling it up already! Thanks Marlene, I think it’s a cutie as well.
I LOVE< LOVE< LOVE IT!! It's adorable.
Author
Aww, thank you Rose. Your comment makes my day. Hope you have a great week.
I love your humor on a Thursday morning! What a hilarious tale you told!! I love the hutch…it’s beautiful but simple and neutral enough to decorate for the seasons. What an amazing find…I would LOVE a vintage hutch but my house is just not big enough. Sigh. Have a great day, Cindy!!

If my tale were only a tale but I still feel a little ashamed for the way I acted. Just a little. LOL. I didn’t think I had a place for such a large piece either but now that I’ve stuffed it in an unusual place, I’m all for finding more treasures! Just can’t tell the mister. Have a great day Rachel and thank you so much.
Wow! What an amazing deal. It’s beautiful and perfect I. It’s new spot. Hugs to you.
Author
Thank you Renae. I’m already thinking garlands and a collection of little white houses I make in pottery! 😉
You’ll have tons of fun with this; it’s adorable and very “summer/lattice/garden-y”! It looks perfect in that spot!
Author
You won’t believe this but it’s totally true – I thought of you when we started packing it in the truck. I imagined it looking amazing in your garden room and could see all of your beautiful treasures on it. Thank you for all the inspo Debra! XXOO
It was pretty before but I just love it now. The cabinet was a perfect find and looks beautiful there.
Author
You are so sweet, thank you so much Robin! I seriously appreciate that. I was afraid people were going to say I should have never put a hutch in a living room. Hope you are enjoying your summer. Thanks again.
It works perfectly because you have a similar footprint on the floor and wall opposite, they balance each other. Great buy!
Author
I still can’t believe it was only $50! And I agree with you. We’ve discussed several times around there that the wall was so hard to balance with the rest of them. Thanks so much Beth. I really appreciate you. Have a great day!
What a fantastic find! If I’d been there I would have fought you for it 😉 (just kidding of course, lol) I don’t think that’s an unusual place at all, and it is perfect for your blue glass. I’ve had some awesome luck at our local auctions and estate sales (I’m in the hill country between Wimberley and Blanco). A few years ago I was queen of the $5 auction buy, lol, but lately prices have been considerably higher. My absolute best buy was at an auction in Austin in February 2011 (I remember, the date because that was the previous deep freeze year – 4 days below freezing up here, brrr). The gentleman who owned the house had passed away and the family was selling everything. He had collected literally TONS of reclaimed building materials: barn wood, antique beadboard, windows and doors among other things. He had over 120 solid wood antique doors – some with original glass or ceramic knob. The auctioneer sold them one at a time to start with, but when interest dropped he offered them all for one money. I got them (80 of them, plus 12 antique window screens, and 4 broken antique screen doors) for $5. I only wanted 2 of them for a project, so I took the remainder to an auction house in Giddings and cleared about $1600 from them. I kick myself for not buying the beadboard too, but I didn’t have room on my truck and trailer – a truck bed load went for $75 – still an absolute bargain! Sorry for the long essay, but your fabulous find brought back a very nice memory (not to mention the pleasure in thinking about a cold day when it’s 100 degrees outside, lol).

Oh my soul Patty! I love hearing all about your life experiences and wowza what a time that was! I would have been so overwhelmed yet excited at the same time and honestly wouldn’t have known what to do with it all. You sound like one smart cookie! I could learn several things from you.
We’ve only passed through Wimberley and boy did I want to stay the week. Such a cute town. It’s on my list of things to do when the weather cools down. Maybe this fall? I’ll have to check out Blanco too. Thanks so much for the smiles and encouragement. Hope you have a wonderful weekend. Stay cool!
Definitely come this way for a visit – lots of fun things to do in the area!
Cindy
I love it and what a steal. I don’t think it’s weird at all.
Author
Thanks so much Rachel! If you don’t think it’s weird than you’ve talked me into keeping it there! Yes, you have that much influence over me. 😉
I love it–your lucky day–
hugs, di
Author
It was definitely my lucky day! Glad you like it Diane. Thank you!
I am totally smitten! It is beautiful and meant to go in that space. I love your attitude, get there PDQ, combed hair or not. lol I totally would have done the same.
Author
You made me laugh Pamela. I’m pretty sure my hair had a rat nest (as my grams called it) in it. LOL! Thanks so much. You made my day.
Storage is storage Girlfriend. Don’t care where someone else tells you to put it, it looks great right where it is!
Author
Kinda what I was thinking. I need to start listening to friends like you more often. Thank you! Hope you have a wonderful weekend.
What a fabulous save, Cindy, and I can’t believe the price either! I’m so glad you got it and placed it between these chairs too. It looks amazing! This is definitely a piece you’ll be able to use for years to come. Big hugs, CoCo
Author
I seriously couldn’t believe there wasn’t a sold sign on it. It was meant to be. Thanks bunches CoCo. Now to fill it up! LOL.
What’s wrong with a hutch in the family room? I’ve seen them in kitchens and dining rooms, bathrooms and family/living rooms. I’m redoing a hutch right now that will go in my apartment living/dining room combo. It should have been done a long time ago, but… 😬
Author
Seems like things that take a little longer are worth it and look a little better so kudos to you Ann. I bet your hutch will be fabulous. I actually love them. All sizes and styles. They are so handy! Thanks for the encouraging words. Happy summer!
What a deal (and steal)! And I think it’s in a perfect location. Oh, the fun you’ll have with that, truly.
Author
I think so too Rita, thank you! Went shopping today (didn’t find anything) looking for things to use on it for fall. Ha!
Great deal, Cindy! If I did that, I would literally have to get rid of something to make room for it in our condo.
Author
Thanks Carol. How are you, friend?! I’m afraid I will have to do the same thing with whatever comes next on the treasure hunts. Although, if I can get these kids out of here, I’ll have my office back. Looking forward to that! Hope you’re enjoying your summer and those grandkids.
Oh my goodness! I would never have thought to put a hutch between my chairs in the living room…….. but; boy I’m thinking about it now! Love it!
Author
Yay JoAnne! I’m so excited you’ve been inspired! I say try it. I’ve loved it so far and think it will be there permanently. Well until I get bored one day. :0
Great score on the hutch Cindy! We need to go shopping together, because I know you would have my back if I found a treasure like that!
Author
You know it! I’d be ready to tackle someone for you Michelle. Well maybe more so in the winter months. LOL. Hope you’re having a great week.
It’s perfect there! Great eye!
Author
I was hoping you’d like it there. We are both a little different in our design styles and I love that! Thanks bunches Tric
Love it! That is a great find! I love your comment about the knobs! I don’t think I would have noticed!
Our electric company informed us of rate increases during peak hours!
Author
I think a rate increase is even worse! Thanks for the visit. Hope you have a great week.
I think it is so cute. What a fabulous score. It was meant to be yours.
Author
Thank you Mary. Each time I walk through the living room I smile.
Love the hutch, I like the way you think outside of the box. Just because it’s a hutch doesn’t mean it has to go in the dining room. Just like country ham and eggs can be for any meal.
Author
You are so right Phyllis, thank you! And I love having breakfast food for dinner. Ham and eggs sounds pretty good right about now too. Hmmm.
