Small Mercury Glass Ornaments
I love change and enjoy the challenge of keeping things different each year for the holidays. I tell myself to vary the theme and decorate our trees and home unlike the year before. The first thing I do is pull out and fluff the Christmas trees. There are four. Six if you count the two big ones in the girls rooms. The Mister counts the smaller ones too but that makes me sound obsessed so I don’t. Duh.

I decided this years holiday colors would be white and green with just a touch of red. Last years color palette was completely neutral and the year before was all red and white with touches of turquoise because of the kitchen wall color. That year was not my fave. Not because the colors didn’t work together but because I have come to adore neutrals.
Cedar Leaves Placemats
As I was looking for inspiration, I read a friends blog and one of her tips was “resist the temptation to over do it”. I swear she was talking to me. I frequently tell myself – a lot is good but more is better. Obviously that isn’t always good but her suggestion was a gentle reminder and one I needed to hear.
As I’m not one to ignore a prompting (LOL), I kept her advice in mind and kept things simple. At least simple to me. I went back to neutrals, added a tiny bit of red and I think it looks lovely and feels extra cozy without looking like a jungle.
Beginning with the place settings, the silver antler napkin rings work well with the woodsy vibe and other silver accents around the room. The napkin rings get used a lot during the holiday season and through winter.
I found the ceramic card holders in a boutique near me and got 4 of the houses. Then found 2 trees for the place settings on the ends. I always change the end place settings to keep things more interesting.
This will be our first time to use crackers. For years I thought they were filled with confetti and cleaning that up didn’t appeal to me. Then I came across these from World Market and read the label. The container says they are filled with a snap, a charades game and a joke. In this house we are all about the jokes and games so let the fun begin!
The centerpiece couldn’t have been easier for my Christmas theme this year. I found it at Kirkland’s and think it looks so real. All I had to do was plop in the candle. I tried white, green and even black but found the little pop of red worked best. I actually intended to use 12 small tapered candles instead of the 1 pillar but when I put them all in, it sat too close to the live greenery on the chandelier which became a fire hazard and I didn’t particularly want to hear if from the Mister. All that said, don’t be afraid to use something other than one pillar candle. Try a floating candle, several tapered candles or even fill it with ornaments instead!
Sticking with simple greenery, I sent the Mister to Lowes to dig through the trash. I’m smiling from ear to ear as I type that out. The first time I asked him to do it, he just looked at me like I was crazy even though he knows I’m a dumpster diver. Now he knows exactly what I want and willingly goes because the left over tree limbs are free!
I use fresh greens just about everywhere. On the mantels, around the vignettes, on the plates, etc. When they get crunchy I just head back to the trash bin at Lowes. And depending on where you have them displayed, you can spritz them with water to help keep them moist.
I truly think this might be my favorite Christmas dining room so far. It’s because it came together quickly, kept it simple and it feels extra cozy because of all the greenery around. And this is the first time I’ve used one of our King of Christmas trees in the dining room. It really sets the mood in the evening when the lights come on automatically and the color is gorgeous!
Everyone compliments us saying they’ve never seen one like it and it looks fantastic without any ornaments. Thank you so much. I actually like Christmas trees the most without anything on them. I used to think it was mandatory to dress them but when I finally stopped listening to other people and did what I liked, they mostly stay naked. LOL. Glad you could visit today. 🙂

They have them at Kirkland’s! They looked so pretty at Thanksgiving too with my cedar and dried orange garland on the mantel. Hope you can get your hands on some. You’ll love them.
Gorgeous. I love your pretty greenery with just the right touch of red as an accent, so pretty. Your placesettings are so pretty and using something different at the head and end of the table makes it even more fun. I agree, that tree is so pretty with just the lights. What a great addition to your dining room.

Beautiful! It’s so lovely, comforting, and balanced, and the mantel just perfect. I love the tips about “gathering” greenery! Ha! I actually found a wonderful huge pin board years ago leaning against a Home Depot dumpster. What a find in perfect condition! And to stretch the life of greenery is surely capturing an important part of the Christmas spirit, yes? Little can become much. Peace to you and yours this holiday season, right where you are.

So soft and peaceful Cindy.b I used tons of greens too but still went a bit crazy but it’s soft and neutral.
Natural elements are my favorites! I have a hubby that gets me and knows exactly what I’m lo9king for too.

Your dining room is just gorgeous! I love the napkins. I have similar ones without the red. I love the addition of the red. The napkin rings are wonderful and your mantle is just gorgeous. I think your friend gave you good advice. I tend to go too far sometimes as well. I always have to remind myself edit edit edit!!
