I here the word vignette all the time and think what a quirky word. But what other term is there to describe the clump of items that looks so cute put together on any table or counter space? If you know of one, please let me know. And if you’d like to see how to put together the perfect vignette in 3 easy steps, keep reading!
The perfect vignette in 3 easy steps!
Here are the items you’ll need:
- tray – can be made of anything just keep it low and flat
- greenery or flowers – faux or real, fluffy or thin
- books – a small stack looks better than one huge book
- your items – which can be useful or decorative
Step 1: Start with your tallest or largest item first. Place it in the corner and at the back of the tray. If your items are the same size, use your books to make one item stand taller than the rest. Candlesticks work well for this.
Step 2: Place your second or medium height item on the opposite side of the tallest item. This should be in the back as well. As you add things to your tray, you are trying to taper down to the smallest item in front.
Step 3: Now place your smallest element in between the small and medium height items.
Hints for the perfect vignette!
Hint #1 – Try and keep a cohesive color scheme. 2-3 colors will be more pleasing.
Hint #2 – Texture is a nice additive.
Hint #3 – Don’t worry about having a vase of real flowers and a pot of fake greenery too. It’s fine!
Hint #4 – Your items don’t always have to be decorative. They can be convenient or useful to you as well.
There is no wrong way to do this. Have fun and play around until you like it.
What I like most about vignettes is how it keeps things neat and tidy. No matter what it is, it looks organized yet more special when corralled in a tray. So there you go! Now you can style the perfect vignette in 3 easy steps and look like a total pro!

Oh, good, that just justified the $5 shallow wine box tray I just got at a yard sale today! Thought I’d stain it a medium brown as it is too light to suit me. I loved your simple instructions; will keep them in mind.
