No Sew Drop Cloth Curtains

I’m sure if you’ve been on Pinterest at all or read any sort of budget decor blog, you’ve seen drop cloth curtains.  Well I finally made my own No Sew Drop Cloth Curtains and here’s my 5 cent opinion.

First, I need 126″ curtains and shopped around for weeks but those babies aren’t cheap.  The only ones I found that I liked and had a modern farmhouse feel were $200 each.  EACH!  Um you might as well tell Jose no way!

So plan B was make them myself.  I sort of giggle when I say that because I do not sew.  The last dress I made was in 8th grade.  It was a navy blue calico print puff sleeve gathered drop waist dress.  Took me a week.  The last thing to do before becoming a fashionista was sew in the zipper.  I ran out of navy thread in the bobbin and decided to take a short cut and use a different already threaded bobbin.  Well, that spring/summer dress turned into a fall/winter dress because I had to wear a sweater over it to hide the RED thread on the zipper.  Insert rolling eyes.  That pretty much describes how I feel about sewing and the obnoxious time it takes to accomplish anything.

So about those curtains.  I got two different thicknesses.  I chose a heavy duty for the window curtains because I felt they’d hang better and look more substantial.  And I got the medium weight cloth for the smaller curtain that will hang under the fabulous mantel to hide the chair railing.  If you’d like to see the post about the mantel, you can see that here.

I had planned to wash and bleach them like I did when I recovered the chairs in Navasota, but these came out exactly the same color as the new chairs from Kirkland’s so I was able to save that step.

Edges to the drop cloth curtains by CountyRoad407.com

You can see the pre-made edges are not bad.  They look better than any hem I’d make.  So because they look pretty good, I decided that for the window curtains I’d just fold and cut the largest drop cloth in half lengthwise.  Now I’m the Queen of Budget Curtains since I made two curtains with only one drop cloth.  ๐Ÿ˜‰

After cutting the drop cloth in half I recommend using Fray Check.   As my life goes, I was out of that so it will have to be done some time before I wash them.  I know it sounds like I’m lazy.  Not really.  More like impatient.  Anyway, the threads do come off pretty easy so don’t pull too many or you’ll get a boho look instead of a farmhouse look. ๐Ÿ˜‰

Simply pull off the tape and fold over.  It looks pretty good.  Easy peasy lemon squeezy!

The hardest part of this whole no sew drop cloth curtain project was trying to get the paper backing off the double sided tape.  Geez-Louise!  A 30 minute project turned into 45 because of that!  That one thing changed my mind – use fabric glue instead.  Goodness gracious.

I did try to iron them.  Put your iron on the hottest setting possible.  Then after heavily squirting with water and major pressing, you might get some of the creases out.   I gave up and am hoping the creases will decrease after a day or two but I’m not holding my breath.

One last thing.  I could have cut them exactly the length I needed and used double sided tape or fabric glue but I wanted a bit more pizzazz with these.  I chose to hang the rod as high as it would go.  I’ve always thought it makes the windows and ceilings seem taller.  And since the drop cloth came in a 12 foot length, I simply folded the top over and used the clips I already had instead of making a rod pocket.  It’s like a ruffle but more pizzazzy.

Truth be told:  The Mister didn’t think they were going to look very good and actually didn’t like that I didn’t sew the hems.  Hello, I said it’s called a No Sew project for a reason.  Can you tell he’s a perfectionist?  #MyMarriedStruggle

For the drop cloth hanging under the mantel, I simply folded over a 3 inch edge and made a rod pocket.  Still used the double sided tape and it hangs on a rod that the Mister mounted and hung from underside of the mantel.

I actually love how they turned out.  They were so easy to make and I’d totally do it again.  Now if you are a perfectionist, this isn’t the budget friendly DIY for you.  Nope.  Even when you get them out of the package the drop cloths are not straight.  But if you are anything like me (very impatient when it comes to DIY), then grab a couple of drop cloths for sure.

I have a long piece left over so I’m already thinking of the many things I can do with it.  Maybe a table runner, a pillow, an apron, a lamp shade cover… oh the masterpieces in the making!  ๐Ÿ˜‰

I was the same way but with a whole list of other things I want to buy, it seemed to be the best idea. Glad I did it.

I love all my drop cloth curtains. I like to soak them for a couple of hours with bleach; not necessarily to lift color, but the bleach seems to soften the fabric. They come out of the dryer with fewer wrinkles.

I think your curtains look great.

Cool! What are you going to make for her? There are so many things to make with those little drop cloths. I just hope the manufacturer doesn’t find out and raise the price! Hope you have a wonderful weekend too Jemma.
