As spring has truly sprung around us, I have been captivated by what I see. Even the fresh vegetables at the grocery store look so tasty. All of it makes me think about our farmers and gardeners. How do they do it? I truly admire their green thumbs. Today’s Pinterest Challenge is about container gardening. Now I can’t cultivate or create an entire garden (trust me, I’ve tried), but I can start small. That being said, I’m sharing how to turn almost anything into a planter.
Do you enjoy surrounding yourself in flowers and lots of green plants? I do! I’ve tried everything. To make my life easier I’ve tried perennials. But the only thing that comes back is a tiny sprig of something unrecognizable. Not sure anyone in my family has that kind of patience.
So I’ve resigned myself to buying annuals every season, every year, over and over again. It’s okay. To me, it’s like paying taxes – to stay, you gotta pay. Same for plants – to try, you gotta (re)buy.
Technically, the definition of gardening is the art of tending the garden. My plan is to tend the small containers and pretend I’m a gardener. Surely that counts.
Dishfunctional Designs Pinterest Challenge inspirational photo
Our inspiration photo is from Laura at Dishfunctional Designs. I absolutely love what she’s done along with what I can incorporate from her photo.
- A galvanized container with rusty parts
- How she repurposed a bucket into what she wanted
- How the fabulous plants are stuffed inside and spill over the sides.
I love how she stacked the buckets on a fabulous old wooden door but I don’t have anywhere I can do that. Here’s what I can do instead.
I began looking in the closet for something I could repurpose. What I found was the small tabletop wheelbarrow I used for a dessert tablescape in this post last year. Although it’s white, it is metal and has a few rusty areas. It’s a great size to put on the patio table. Talk about a fun repurposed project!
All you need is to drill some holes!
This tidbit right here is the key to turning just about anything into a container for plants – drill some holes for drainage. The mister thought we only needed three for this container. And since he’s the one with slightly more green thumbs than me, I went along with it.
Once you’ve drilled the holes you need something to cover the holes so the dirt doesn’t fall through when watered. I didn’t have anything around except for some leftover cheesecloth. I folded it into several layers and placed it over the holes. Easy peasy.
Cheesecloth to the rescue!
Now for the fun part! Choose small plants. When you remove them from the plastic containers, ruffle the roots a little and stuff them inside your new repurposed planter.
What do you think? Looks pretty cute to me. We have a small round table on the patio and when I finished cleaning up we decided to enjoy the beautiful spring weather and dine outdoors.

Can you see how to turn almost anything into a planter? It’s easy and transformed my surroundings from drab to fab!
A beautiful tabletop centerpiece.
It turned out to be the perfect height for a centerpiece or in this case a side piece. ๐
Did you find me via South House Designs? Yay! Thank you for the visit. I think she’s pretty darn clever with her fishing net idea.
Next on the Pinterest Challenge is Wendy at WM Design House. She is quite creative, always has a great idea, and green thumbs! You can check out the others below. Happy Spring friends!

LOL, those are my favorite colors too. I am tending to it well. Hoping it stays alive through summer. Thank you Diane.
Isn’t it amazing what can be accomplished with a drill? This is absolutely adorable, Cindy! I love it!

I think so! I had the mister use the great big drill bit once on a huge galvanized piece years ago. I call it my ice cream cart. That’s how big it is. I love it! Hope you have a great week Missy, thank you.
Love your sweet planter Cindy. It is perfect for your outdoor table and adds the perfect amount of greenery.

I appreciate that Wendy, thank you. Now if I could only have you move here to help keep it alive would be wonderful! ๐
I love the way your mind works Cindy! This little wheelborrow is such a cute idea, and the flowers are perfect! I’m going to have to get out my drill to see what I can repurpose into a planter! ๐

The first thing I repurposed into a planter was that giant “ice cream cart” at the farmhouse. It still looks fantastic and I love seeing it every time we drive up the road. I’ve drilled holes in so many things it’s hard to remember them all, but I’ve loved each one. Thanks so much Michelle.
