Hello Friends! I like a good cloche idea but honestly, they make me nervous. It could be the 5 people and 3 dogs running around the house but I can’t change that so today I’m going to share how to make a cute inexpensive rustic cloche using grapevine wire which is basically non-breakable! Woohoo!
How To Make A Cute Inexpensive Rustic Cloche
This post is from the archives and still fabulous!
This month’s Pinterest Challenge inspiration photo comes from Beth at Home Stories A to Z. She gave us a fall tour but we are concentrating on her fall decorated cloche. What I noticed about this area besides the obvious cloche were the flowers and pumpkins. It was all beautiful and worked nicely with her dining room.
As pretty as it is, the fun thing about a Pinterest Challenge is we get to look at the inspiration photo through our own eyes and make it work for us and our individual home styles.
Inspiration Photo from Home Stories A to Z
Have you ever heard of Grapevine Wire? I had not until I wanted to make a cloche. I’ve made a cloche before. A super cute chicken wire cloche from a thrifted lamp shade (which you can see here) but this time I wanted something rustic looking and similar to willow branches.
If you’re a floral designer or love to make flower arrangements you know exactly what grapevine wire is. You can find it in the floral department next to the floral tape and wire cutters. It’s like wired ribbon but it’s wrapped in (I think paper) something that looks like grapevine. It is inexpensive and comes in a 25 foot roll. I got 2 rolls and each are regularly each $4.99.
Steps 1-3 to making a rustic cloche.
First you need to decide how large you want the cloche to be. I didn’t want it to be huge so I used our cookie jar to start wrapping the wire around to make the base of the cloche. I wrapped it 4 times around and secured it by twisting the ends around each other.
Steps 4-5
Next I started making and attaching the outside edges. They are simple curved pieces of the grapevine wire crimped around the base to hold everything together. You can make them all the same size or do what I did and make 3 different sizes (roughly 15′, 18′ and 24′). Placing them on opposite sides of each other. I know it looks like a mess but it’s super easy to put together.
Steps 6-7
After you’ve attached all of the side pieces you want, cut two more pieces that will go around the outside edge. One for the bottom portion about 1/4 of the way up and the other for the top about 1/4 way down from the top. Weave them in and out of each side section and secure like you did the rest; crimping the ends around the other wire pieces.
The last thing I did was to cut off about an 8″ piece of wire and made a loop for the handle at the top. I could have crimped it around the top 2 pieces but my fingers were tired of it so I tied it on with a piece of twine. Easy peasy!
So rustic and cute!
This is how it will look once your are finished. It took about 20 minutes to make and even though I opened the second package of wire, I used it only for the handle. So depending on your size, you could get away with one 25′ package. How do you like it? It’s exactly what I was hoping for and definitely rustic.
Because I enjoyed it so much, you can see I played around with a few different looks underneath. I can tell it’s going to be one of my new favorite decorating pieces. π
Here’s one more thing you could do with this super cute grapevine wire cloche. Add fairy lights before you fill it up! This is the first time I’ve used fairy lights but it won’t be the last. I love how they look.

Thank you Julie but girl, it was so hard to photograph! My camera didn’t know what to focus on. Went right through it. #bloggerproblems LOL. Glad you liked it and thanks for the pin too.
HI cindy, I have never heard of grapevine wire. OMG I love this cloche! You are right you are going t have so much fun with this and the twinkle lights! My mind is racing. Okay, quick question? What did you use to attach the wire at the base and down the sides? Did you cut smaller pieces of twine to secure the grapevine wire to the base and sides?
Author
You will be addicted (like me) to that wire and twinkle lights! I’m all about the twinkling now. π If you look at the “steps” photos it will show how I just bent the wired around itself and crimped the ends around each other. The only twine I used was to secure the handle/knob on the top. It’s super easy! Have fun!
Well if that isn’t just the cutest cloche!!!

Awe, thanks Carol. One of these would look pretty over something in your beautiful garden! Hope you can join us again next month. You are missed.

I am all over this darling cloche project and can’t wait to make one. Love how you added lights to it too for. Brilliant Cindy as always! Thanks for hosting our PC.

My pleasure Michelle. I love those lights too. Maybe I should have a party in the dark and light the entire room with only teeny lights?! Hmmm. Sounds like a New Years Eve Party. Covid masks and teeny lights. What a night! LOL!
That is so stink’n cute and clever, you really did it this time.I wish i lived next door to you , my house would be so much cuter. I hope i can do what you did, at least i will try.

Awe Marlene, thank you. That made my day. I wish we lived next door to each other too. Although I’ve seen some of my neighbors homes… some of them hurt my eyes! LOL. Let me now how your cloche turned out! I’d love to see it.
I have never heard of Grapevine wire but on my next trip to Michael’s or Hobby Lobby, I’m going to be looking for it. I love the rustic cloche that you created and especially love it with fairy lights wrapped around it. Thank you so much for hosting this challenge each month. I so much enjoy it!

Thank you Paula. Iβm really excited that you enjoy it each month. The wire will be in the floral section by the floral tape. What are you going to do with it? Iβm so curious to hear what my creative friends come up with. Hope itβs a post!
What a fun idea, Cindy!! I’ve used that wrapped wire before but only to repair caning on the old wicker settee we had for years. It looks terrific with the fairy lights and all of the ideas you “planted” inside. <3
Enjoy your new garden cloche,
Hugs,

Thanks Barbara! At first I thought it was going to look like a first grader made it. Not knocking first grade projects. Those are some of my faves from my kids. Just wasnβt excited until the end when it was all smushed into shape. π. Repairing the caning on an old chair is quite smart! Iβm still thinking of more ideas to do with my left over roll. π€
Hi Cindy, I never heard of grapevine wire before. How did I miss that???
Your cloche is wonderfully rustic and perfect for fall. Love all the ways you used them.

I appreciate that Rachel, thanks! If you want to find the wire, it’s right next to the floral tape. Thanks for the pin too! Hope you have a great week.
I always have a roll of that awesome bark-covered wire around; I use it for everything. I love this idea; totally gnarly;) Bummed I couldn’t join you on this one:( I’m so ready to get the Fall decor going!
Author
Of course you do! I should have known. I’m ready too for fall decorating! I think because I’m over 2020 and wearing masks and fogging up my glasses and sweat breathing and everything fun being canceled! Ugh! Hope you can join us next month but I get why you couldn’t. Looking forward to YOUR fall decor for sure! π
That is adorable. Thanks so much for sharing.

oh Cindy, this is THE cutest idea for a cloche ever!! It’s so fun and rustic. I’ve purchased this wire but in a darker grapevine color. I would never have thought of creating a cloche. LOVE it!!
Author
I’m excited that you like it. Hobby Lobby didn’t have the darker color so I didn’t even know it came in that! Now I want to check other stores to find some. I’d love to make one in the darker color. Thanks Debra!
How cute and creative! I love the fairy lights!
I am so bummed about having to miss this hop, but with the stressful return to teaching online at the very same time, I just couldn’t swing this one. I am on for the next one!
Lots of great ideas here as always!

This is why I adore you, Cindy! You always make me think of things that I would have never thought to do or create. This is fabulous and so creative too. I love all the texture it adds and how you can dress it up or down in a vignette too. I love it all! Hugs, CoCo

I am always in awe of your ideas Cindy!!! Can I DIY like you when I grow up?
Author
LOL. I feel the same about your talents Kristin! Wouldn’t it be fun if one day there were a conference that we could all get together and bring one idea for each of us to make?! It would be better than Disney World!
So glad you shared this with Charming Homes & Gardens because I LOVED it!!!!

Thank you Kristin! It was really fun and easy to make. I’ve been putting it in different places with different things underneath. π

It was new to me as well but I think it will be handy in a lot of projects. Have a great week Jenn!
So cute, Cindy and perfect for Fall!!
Author
Thank you Rachel. I really enjoy using it.
Such a fantastic idea, Cindy! I love the way cloches look in vignettes but I have no idea what to put under them sometimes and like you, I’m always worried Piper is going to knock it over so I never use them. This definitely takes care of that and it looks amazing to boot. Loving and pinning sweet friend, this is such a creative idea. Hugs, CoCo

We’ve had a few catastrophes around here. But to be honest, it’s been me! I bought a huge vintage demi-john in the most gorgeous blue color earlier this summer. Lugged that thing around and the second day it was home, I picked it up for a photo and dropped it on the tile. It shattered as did my heart. Ugh. I was so mad at myself. So really I can’t blame the dogs as much as I’d like too. Thanks for the sweet comment and the pin. π
This cloche is so charming! I love the natural and rustic look it gives to your fall decor.
