Hello Friends!  Today is the Lifestyle of Love hop!  The bi-monthly blog hop for those of us that live and love all things farmhouse, vintage, antique and repurposed treasures!  This month we are talking frames and how we use them in our homes.  I’m going to show you how to easily frame charming sugar sacks that I found on our recent road trip.   If you’re popping over from Lora B’s – Create and Ponder, welcome!  Don’t you just love everything she does?!

How To Easily Frame Charming Sugar Sacks

What do you do when you have a best friend that is in the process of moving and willing to give away a bunch of crap goodies?  You say yes and thank you to an entire box of old frames.  They arrived at the perfect time because I needed to do something with the adorable sugar sacks I found while on vacation a few weeks ago.

frame edges with wire and staplesMishap with staples being too long

I chose two different frames out of the box she gave us and if you know me at all then you know I’m probably going to paint whatever it is a nice chalky white.  Yep, I love that Rustoleum brand Chalked paint in Linen White (you can see my review here).  I even painted the cardboard backing in the smaller frame.  I couldn’t leave it poo poo brown – yuck.  So after 2 quick coats of paint, the smallest sack was carefully placed back into the frame and the glass put back on.

repaired staples on framesEasily smooshed staples and painted over them

On the more ornate frame I decided to hang the larger sack like I would if it were hanging on a clothes line.  Remember those?  I removed the original wire from the back and used it as the “clothes line”.  The only mishap to the frame was when I stapled the wire onto the back of the frame.  The staples were longer than the depth of the frame.  No worries though, I simply smooshed the staples down and used my finger to fill in the area around it with more chalk paint.  If this would have happened to a smooth frame, it wouldn’t have worked.  πŸ™‚

Y’all, look how cute they are!  Framing them was so easy and literally took about 10 minutes once the paint had dried.  Which is another reason I love that Rustoleum paint.  It dries super fast!  And now they vintage sacks will be better taken care of than how I found them in the antique store – just thrown in an old basket on the floor.

Not only did I snatch them up because they were very inexpensive but the best part was they were from places we’d visited on our road trip to Montana.  Can you see Missoula, Montana on the one above?  We stayed in a fabulous hotel there in Missoula where our patio over looked the river with mountains in the background and the old walking bridge lined with lights.  Great memories.

In my opinion, hanging one of the sacks with the cutest-little-clothes-pins-I-ever-did-see is precious.  Can you see the wording on this second sack?  It says U and I Sugar from Utah-Idaho Sugar Co.  Not only is that an adorable name for a company (I know it stands for UT and ID) but we stayed there as well!  Not in Chinook, MT but in Utah and Idaho where we drove through beautiful neighborhoods with gorgeous fall trees, shopped in the cutest ski town (Park Cities), picked up stray potatoes from the side of the road and traversed the hills and picked up rocks in Saylor Creek where Sherlock used to live!  Yep, another fond memory each time I look at them.

Now you know how to easily frame charming sugar sacks.  They were both super easy.  And since the frames were free and I paid less than $10 for both sacks combined, it was a very inexpensive DIY wall art project.  Before I send you over to Amber at Follow The Yellow Brick Home, I wanted to show you a couple of other ways I use frames in our home.

I use a frame over the builder grade mirror in the guest bathroom.  I switch them out depending on the seasons and I think it makes a character filled difference.  What do you think?  Do you hate it or find it clever?

Here’s the ol’ frames inside of a frame trick.  πŸ˜‰  The smaller frames hold sentimental items that I want to remember.  Tags from the year the Mister and I were married and both identification tags that were on Sherlock and Scout when they were adopted.  Haven’t found anything yet for the round frame but it’s on my treasure hunting list.

Wreaths don’t have to hang on just a door or window.  I hang them inside frames on walls for a little more pizzazz.  Beefs it up and makes more of a statement.

Even though I have several more ideas, I better stop.  It’s time to check out how my friends use frames in their homes.

Happy Decorating Friends!

I have never seen a sugar sack and it’s wonderful that you found two on your trip that serves not only as farmhouse decor but also a trip souvenir. I want to take the trip that you took this past fall! We have friends who moved to Missoula from Lynchburg a few years ago. Another friend and her husband are planning to move to Bozeman and have already purchased a second home there and started a business. Yellowstone didn’t help my Montana obsession either. I picture myself on the Dutton Farm riding a horse with Rep. Ha-ha! We skied Park City long ago and so much enjoyed that quaint town.

Back to your frames. For the sugar sacks, I love how you framed one and for the other made it look like it is hanging on a clothesline. I also enjoyed your other frame ideas, especially hanging a smaller and pretty frame over a builder grade bathroom mirror.

Thanks bunches Paula. I’m with you on the picturing myself on a ranch in Montana but haven’t seen that show. Beware, you need to plan a loooong trip because if you go in the fall, it won’t be long enough. I’m super jealous of your friends. Maybe one day we’ll move there too and become friends with them and you’d come visit us all the time?! Yeah, yeah, that sounds like a great plan!

How cute. Your sugar sacks are adorable and they are a perfect reminder of your trip. Thanks for hosting this fun hop. I love that little wall dish holder. Adorable.

    • November 14, 2020 / 10:08 am

Thank you Katie. The little wall dish holder usually has cook books displayed in it but I love to decorate it and switch things out. If you want one, I got it on Decor Steals. I think it was like $24.00? It had to be cheap or I wouldn’t have purchased it so, sign up and keep an eye out. It would be super cute in your new/old country house! πŸ™‚

Thank you Laura. Me too! I think upcycling and reusing vintage finds is a way of giving back and remembering the hard working people that came before us. Have a great weekend.

Thank you for the ideas about the frames. I have always been fascinated with them and I have a sugar sack from Central America where I used to live.

    • November 14, 2020 / 10:12 am

Oh my goodness, you need to get that sugar sack out where you can see it! Each time someone came over they’d probably ask about it and think of the cool stories you could tell from living there?! How fun. Thank you Karen for the visit today. I’m jealous of your CA sugar sack! πŸ˜‰

These sugar sacks are so cute, Cindy, LOVE how you’ve framed them. I’ve found a few from around my neck of the woods here in Missouri. They usually have the “sweetest” graphics, perfect for the spotlight. I envy your trips, sounds wonderful! Thanks again for organizing the Hop. These are always such fun!

    • November 14, 2020 / 10:38 pm

So glad you enjoy and participate Debra! Thank you. I hope to find more and have an entire collection some day. πŸ˜‰

I couldn’t believe the sugar sacks were still there in this popular store in an adorable town. It was like they hid themselves until I arrived. πŸ˜‰ I’d really like to find a bunch more! Thanks for your sweet comment CoCo. Happy Sunday!

I love finding old sacks like these and then to frame them is very clever. I pinned it so when i find a frame i can remember what i was going to do, lol!!

    • November 15, 2020 / 3:43 pm

LOL Marlene, you sound like me. I have to pin and write things down all the time! Happy Sunday

  13. November 15, 2020 / 7:45 pm

I love that you found these on a trip and now have them as a memory! But honestly…I think you should hang this in you and the mister’s bedroom…U and I Sugar? I mean, come on…;)

    • November 16, 2020 / 8:50 am

LOL! I know, isn’t that the best?! And that’s exactly what I’m going to do. Going to hang them right next to the bed side table! Thanks Lora πŸ™‚

  14. November 15, 2020 / 9:24 pm

Those sugar sacks look adorable framed and I love that they have sentimental meaning! That’s the best kind of vintage that makes a house a home!

I really love the idea of framing the sacks behind glass. I have found a couple of old Kentucky sacks but they have musty smells even after washing that I am not able to tolerate. I have passed over old sacks and linens before for this reason, but your framed sack idea is the perfect solution for me. Now if I only had an extra frame or two…(bahahaha)

I also love the frames in a frame and the framed wreath! Super cute ideas and I love hearing more about your Montana adventures.

Thank you so much for organizing this fun hop!

    • November 16, 2020 / 8:56 am

Thank you Amber. Just like you, I have a ton of frames. I had one just like your latest find that we used in my daughters room 20 years ago and I sold it along with the bed and dresser about 10 years ago. I could kick myself for it! That was back when I had no sense, wanted everything to be new and didn’t have a clue to what style I liked. Oh well, it gives me an excuse to continue the hunt. SO glad you are in our group. You always amaze me with your passion for collecting the most treasures.

  15. November 19, 2020 / 5:49 am

That sounds like the perfect road trip, Cindy! I adore your crap! (LOL) I really love the idea of hanging the sugar sacks. It will be such fun to even change it up easily. This makes me regret not buying a coffee sack that we came across in Italy a few years ago.

    • November 19, 2020 / 10:40 am

Well I’ll probably never go to Italy, so now I’m sad for you! But, that just gives you an excuse to shop even more.
I’d like to find more sugar sacks but since those were the only ones I’ve ever seen, I’m not holding my breath. Thanks for liking my crap Christy! πŸ˜‰ Hope you have a wonderful Thanksgiving!

  16. November 28, 2020 / 9:38 am

Cindy, I love that you hung your sweet pups’ adoption tags in the smaller frames!! I have Skeeter’s collar with all of his dog tags attached. It has hung in two garages now and Yoda’s will hang, too. <3 Love the sentimentality… Thanks for creating this particular frame hop as it gives me lots of new ideas!

Hope you had a lovely Thanksgiving!
