How to Create an Updated Vintage Look For a Delightful Centerpiece
If you’ve been around here anytime at all then you know I don’t consider myself crafty. Everything I try either comes out comical or disastrous. Once in a while I share the disappointment, other times, I relieve you of my indignation. You also know that I love anything vintage with milk glass being one of those loves. Milk glass is hard to find in the antique stores around here. So, when I saw these clear glass knobby vases at Hobby Lobby for $3.00 (at 50% off), I thought I could turn them into something a teeny bit more updated. They didn’t turn out exactly the way I pictured in my head but still pretty cute. Here’s how I devised them.
Steps 1 and 2 for painting knobby vases
Now this isn’t rocket science. I first used a sponge brush and painted two coats of white high-gloss paint on the vase. I thought the high gloss would look closest to milk glass. Well, you can see from the photo that didn’t look so hot. I also didn’t listen to my daughter when she said to tape it off with frog tape to get a smooth line. In my defense, it has little knobs so I didn’t think the tape would work. Wouldn’t you think the same thing?

Next I tried watering down the paint and dipping the vase. I didn’t have anything deep enough so twirling it around seemed the best solution. I would have swirled it around on the inside but I wanted the “updated” look by only doing half of the case. After dipping 3 vases, it was good enough for me. That seems to be my life motto – good enough.

To jazz them up and work with my Valentine’s Day centerpiece, I molded pink Sculpey Clay and cut out little hearts for a “charm”. Using a small heart cookie cutter was much more fun than dipping the vases. I’m actually looking for more things I can do with the clay. It was very satisfying. And I used the metal stamps I already had to press in sayings like you see on the edible candy hearts.
Despite the messiness, I actually like the outcome.
I know, they don’t look exactly like the beautiful vintage milk glass vases but if I squint and maybe put the vases in the middle of a large table far away from the place setting or up on a shelf at least 8 foot high, people might not see that the paint line isn’t perfect. Just maybe they’ll ask oh wow, how can I create an updated vintage look for a delightful centerpiece like that? If they are real friends, that’s what they’d say. My advice with this project, stick with real friends.
