Hello Wonderful Friends! Today is Pinterest Challenge Day and we are changing it up just a tiny bit. Instead of having an inspiration photo found on Pinterest, we have lots of garland ideas for you. If you are hopping over from French Ethereal, howdy! I’m glad you’re here! Barbara is one of the sweetest people I’ve ever had the pleasure to meet. Let’s go ahead and get started with my idea – How to create a super cute Christmas garland to decorate a bed.
How To Create A Super Cute Christmas Garland To Decorate A Bed
When I decided to make a fun Christmasy garland for Macy’s bed, I had a great idea. An easy idea. I just knew it was going to be 15 minutes worth of cutting and gluing and then when I finished and posted this, Country Living Magazine was going to see it and call me asking if they could come photograph it. Well, what’s the saying? The best-laid plans of mice and men often go awry? Well it seems to happen to me every dang time I try and get crafty.
Step 1 – 3 for Christmas Mitten Garland
I got the felt and what I thought was the perfect faux fur fabric for the mitten cuffs. I carried the roll up to the counter, plopped it down and asked for 1/4 yard of each. The nice lady cutting asked what I was making. I explained to her that I was making an adorable mitten garland for my daughters bed and should be finished before dinner. It was 5 pm.
She looked at me and said wow, you must be quite the seamstress. I said oh no, I don’t sew. I’m just going to cut out the mittens and glue on the faux trim and boom, I’ll be done. She smiled ever so sweetly and said well hun, first you’re going to have to throw your trim into the dryer for about 10 minutes on air dry or you’ll be covered in this fur.
Steps 4 – 6 to make Mitten Garland
No problem. Then she said the felt I chose wasn’t going to stick together with fabric glue unless I sewed it. I smiled back and thought, well cute lady behind the counter cutting my felt, you don’t know how good I am with glue. But I just said thank you for the great advice, happy Thanksgiving and headed to the check out. It was time to get crafting.
Finished Mitten Garland
After I air dried the seriously shedding fabric for 15 minutes, I sat down to start cutting out my mittens. I drew out a pattern and doubled the felt so I only had to cut out 5 sets of mittens. Then I began cutting the faux fur for the cuffs. After cutting the first cuff the fabric was again ALL OVER THE PLACE. It looked like I was sitting at the dog groomers with a litter of Labrador Retrievers getting a blow out. That’s when I thought, uh oh, the cute fabric cutting lady was right. What in the world was I thinking?!
Mitten Garland with fresh tree clippings
But I couldn’t stop. I had a garland Pinterest Challenge to do. I started gluing the felt mittens together and guess what? She was sort of right. The glue seeped through the fabric and basically made a big mess. But I kept going. Gluing the fur was next. By the time I had finished the first mitten, the glue was everywhere and my fingers had turned into paws.
This was beginning to be unpleasant and it had been an hour already. So I decided this no-sew project was only going to get done if I did what the lady told me to do in the first place. And surprise, it was so much easier! I had all 5 mittens, the cuffs and the ribbon across the back done in about 20 minutes. In my defense though, I did glue the cuffs and they turned out just fine. But they did get a little sewing when I added the ribbon to the back.
Christmas Bedroom with Mitten Garland
I filled the mittens with Christmas tree clippings that I dug out of the trash bin at Lowe’s and then tied the oh-so-cute garland around the headboard. Just look at it. With the added fairy lights, it’s going to be darling at night. If you don’t want to add fresh greens to the inside of the mittens, try candy canes or an ornament or gift cards, LED candles or old photographs. Just about anything will look adorable hanging from those mittens.
Now you know how to create a super cute Christmas garland to decorate a bed! But goodness me that was a lesson learned. So in conclusion, don’t be like me. Listen to your elders and know that glue isn’t for everything. π If you’d like to see the November 2020 Pinterest Challenge, click here. It was one of my favorites!

Next up with a gorgeous garland idea is Rachel from The Ponds Farmhouse. Grab your cup of coffee and check them all out. It’ll be worth it!
Cindy,
I love your garland idea. Those mittens are just adorable and perfect for a bed. Thanks for all you do.

Thank you Rachel. I’m glad I don’t need to make them again! Happy Thanksgiving
Oh my goodness I’m rolling on the floor picturing the faux fur everywhere. Those sweet ladies behind the counter really know their stuff! Darling garland and I love the greenery! It couldn’t be any cuter!

Girlfriend, it was terrible. I actually had to go back to Hobby Lobby the next day for something and was in the same checkout line as the day before and the lady said she had to go wash her eyes out from that fabric the day before! Yikes
It looks SO cute! I’m laughing because I once cut out 100 pairs of mittens and I thought it would take just one Hallmark movie. It took a WEEK of Hallmark movies. LOL Thank you for hosting!
Author
Oh my, I can’t even imagine. At least you were able to watch Hallmark! Thank you Laura

Thanks bunches Laura. It’s festive and I’m glad Macy wanted to keep it up on her bed! Hope your Thanksgiving is wonderful.
Cindy, very funny!!! I love that the fur was EVERYWHERE! Having sewed large teddy bears in the past out of fur fabric, I know ALL about the fur covering you… ;0) Did you figure out that you have to use a mini Exacto knife to cut the back of the fabric without cutting the fur itself?? It preserves the fur, and you can trim your seams of fur to make sewing easier, too. A needle works for pulling fur out of seams, also. <3
Great project and I think I might make big ones for stockings, since our son, daughter-in-law and little Milo will be down for Christmas. Going with a child friendly animal theme!
Happy Thanksgiving and happy decorating,

Great tips Barbara but no, no one ever told me that! I was glad the bunched up fur was on the back side of the mittens. LOL. IF, and that’s a big IF, I ever use that fur again, I’ll remember the Exacto knife trick. Thank you!
Oh, what a fun post and adorable garland! I’m glad it all worked out in the end because those mittens are the sweetest! Pinned for later inspiration!
Thanks for the chuckles, Cindy!

Thank you Niky. I’m glad it finally worked out but I do not plan to ever use that faux fur again. Ever! That stuff should come with a warning sign. Hope you are enjoying your time with family. Happy Thanksgiving.
Love love the mitten garland and the addition of the fairy lights, but oh my that antique Eastlake bed is totally amazing! I’m visualizing your furry paws during this project, glad you were able to fight your way thru this DIY. Happy Thanksgiving, Cindy!

Thank you Debra. It took several washings to get the fur and glue off my fingers. LOL. I love that bed too. Got it about 10 years ago and have had to do some minor repairs on it but we’ll never give it away. π
So, so cute Cindy! What a great idea. Very unique and original. I love it! I wasn’t going to decorate our bedroom but you may have changed my mind. π Thanks for sharing. Julie

Thanks so much Julie. I usually only change our our bedding for Christmas but this year I decided to go for it. Hope your Thanksgiving was nice.
I love this idea. Using Mittens is so clever. This turned out so fun.

Thank you Marty. I checked yesterday and it’s still hanging on her bed so I guess she likes it! π
Well, after all that trouble the garland is spectacular! And I know Macy is going to love it. You are such a great hostess, even when youβre hosting your children. Will be there on Thursday to see all the fabulous decorating youβve been doing. And maybe even pick up a little for in our turkey? O Lol

The house is a wreck so I’m glad y’all care more about the food and being together than the decorating. I’m losing sleep over the mess! π
Your mitten garland is beautiful, Cindy, and I love how you used it to decorate your bed for Christmas.
Author
Thanks Paula. They are hanging on Macy’s bed. She seems to like it. At least she’s been sweet enough to keep it up there.
They turned out so cute, Cindy! And that bed; I’m drooling! How fun to decorate her room for when she comes home. (I just took over my girl’s room; she gets an air mattress if she ever comes home:(
Author
LOL! I had grand ideas for that room. I wanted my own craft room/pottery studio but having her back home for a while is just as nice. And yes, I adore that bed and it will be a part of the family forever. Happy Thanksgiving!
Such a cute idea, love it!

Sweet of you to say Joy. Thank you!
Cindy, the mitten garland is darling. Sometimes our plans go awry, Even though you had to make some adjustments, the garland still turned out so cute. I keep telling you that you are better at DIY than you think. Thank you for hosting and have a wonderful Thanksgiving with James and the kids.

You are so sweet and such an encouragement which is truly appreciated. I need to keep you in my pocket and pull you out when it’s time to craft. Maybe I’ll just print out a picture of you and put it on my wall with a little conversation bubble that says YOU CAN DO IT! π Thanks so much Carol.
I LOVE your mitten garland… and of course, I love your story even more… well, maybe I love the mittens more… You are amazing!
Author
To late, you already said I was amazing so that’s all I hear. LOL!
I loved how the garland turned out but don’t intend to ever make anything else with that terrible faux fur. I usually keep any scraps but threw it all away this time. Hope your Thanksgiving was nice.
This is such a great idea, Cindy! So much cuteness here. So glad it worked out in the end!
Author
Me too. It almost caused fuzzy finger nightmares. π Thank you for the visit Kim!
You are hilarious Cindy! And despite your challenges, the mitten garland is stinking adorable! I will be sure to listen to any advice the lady at the cutting counter gives me lol!
Author
Well I’m glad my mishaps will help someone! LOL. Hope you have a wonderful week.
Nothing on the planet makes my day like reading one of your posts, Cindy, I swear you are so funny! I’ve never used fur trim before so I’m definitely thankful for the heads up about the mess. Despite all the trouble, they’re absolutely adorable and I know Macy is going to love them. Loving and pinning, CoCo
Author
Well your comments always make my day CoCo! Thank you. Macy does love it. Her new dog got into the trash can I’d thrown the extra fur into and oh my word! Just imagine him shaking it and what the room looked like with it flying everywhere. Let’s just say it wasn’t a beautiful scene from Hallmark movie. :0
