Guest Bathroom Reveal – $100 Room Challenge

Spread the love

Hello Friends!  I am super excited to show you the Guest Bathroom Reveal $100 Room Challenge today!  Let me refresh your memory.  Erin at Lemons Lavender and Laundry challenged us to redo or refresh a space with a budget of only $100.00 in only one month.  Y’all, you can call me the budget queen because I only spent $86.83!!!  I thought for sure I was over budget.  So I skimped on a couple of things but overall, I am thrilled with the outcome!  Y’all are going to see a lot of exclamation points in this post because you can’t hear me squeal in delight.

Guest Bathroom Reveal – $100 Room Challenge

Do you remember the boring builder beige before photo?  I know it’s hard.  There was nothing special about it at all.  And can you remember the goals for it?  They were:

  • Paint the walls
  • Add storage (a shelf)
  • Deal with the mirror (frame it)
  • Accessorize and Deodorize

bathroom with mirror, hadn towel, hand soap

There’s that sad little beige box.  Nothing terribly wrong with it.  It’s not like an outhouse or anything.  It has a full shower, a toilet and running water.  But this Veruca Salt wanted more.  Along with those wants, I got a few more things than I thought I could with my little budget.  Here’s what you can do when you work some sale magic and rummage-the-wood-pile ingenuity.

The Look!

I thought long and hard (almost 2 weeks) about the look I wanted in the guest bathroom.  New bold wallpaper was an option.  Some new trendy paint color too.  But after all that pondering and loss of sleep, I decided to go classic.  Ever since the Mister and I got married in 1992, I’ve been drawn to taupe, black and white.  In our first house, we even painted the outside brick a perfect taupe color.  We had white trim and added black shutters to the windows.  Good times.  So I stopped myself from flashy regrets and did what I still love- classic with a bit of rustic thrown in.

Decorative Curtain for Shower

I found the fabric first which helped me with the paint color.  The fabric was for a decorative curtain to add a little pizazz in front of the shower door.  If you missed the how-to for the decorative curtain, you can see it here.  It is very hard to get good photos of a teeny bathroom that has no window so the curtain actually looks much better in person – I promise.  So do the walls.  They are Sherwin Williams #7031, Mega Greige in color but I used the Lowe’s Simplicity brand because it was a lot less expensive.  With our wall texture it looks like cement but it’s so beautiful and makes quite the statement when you walk in.  Y’all will just have to come visit to see it.  πŸ™‚

open wood shelf with metal brackets, towels and small accent plant

Wood Shelf For Storage

My next project was building the open shelf for towels.  I never really liked having the guests dig under the cabinet for towels.  Extra toilet paper, sure, but not for towels.  So I asked the Mister if we had any left over wood from the shelves we built for the farmhouse kitchen in Navasota.  We had a piece that was perfect.  It was the correct length and the correct depth!  All I did was stain it with left over walnut colored stain.  I did have to purchase the brackets but as luck would have it, they were 50% off at Hobby Lobby.  Yippee!

bathroom cabinet doors with knobs

Knobs For Cabinets and Glass Globes

While I was in Hobby Lobby the knobs were on sale too.  I didn’t think they were in the budget but all I needed was four so I grabbed these little cuties.  I could have gotten brushed nickel, neh.  Thought about white knobs too but the cabinets would have looked yellow(er), no thanks.  Black were just plain boring so I got the weathered grayish taupe.  I love them!

Last on the list before accessorize and deodorize was dealing with the mirror.  I wanted to frame it out but thick molding like I wanted was more than I could spend so instead, I repurposed an old frame I already had and just hung it up with black ribbon.  I love this too!  One day I’ll probably frame it out, but for now, it’s just right.

I never intended to get a new light fixture and in reality, it would have been almost the entire budget so I opted for new glass globes instead.  They put off crazy shadows but I think it’s fun.  Maybe not the best for putting on makeup but if our guests need that, they’ll need to find a hotel.

bathroom with black frame over mirror, towel, lamp, frame, candle and soap

Accessorize and Deodorize

But what hotel is this cute?!  Bigger in size, sure.  But would it have a yummy candle, nice smelly soap and a sugar scrub to match?  I think not.

lamp, framed photo, candle and topiary

And what hotel bathroom has a darling photo of their donkey, Scout?!  None I tell ya, none!  So there it is in all its $86.83 glory.  That’s right, I spent less than $90 out of the $100 budget!  All the accessories you see were in the closet.  The towels are used (by other guests) LOL.  Even the lamp was a project from long ago.  I love walking by but I don’t dare use it!

I wonder who’s going to be the first to step in, ooh and aah, then say goodness me this looks like a million bucks?!  Okay, maybe a thousand.  πŸ™‚

    • September 26, 2019 / 10:46 am

Thank you Barbara. If I could get the wood floors restained in the house along with the stair railing for that kind of money, I would jump for joy! Oh, and have the rest of the ugly gold walls painted too. πŸ˜‰

Cindy you did a great job and great with budget. Love the knobs you picked for the vanity. Still ohing and ahing over your curtain.

    Enjoy your day

    Cindy

Thank you. I’ve been patting myself on the back for a couple of days now. Even the Mister was impressed by the lack of money spent. When I started, he mentioned with doubt in his voice that it was a very small budget. Well I showed him. Which is actually a bad thing. I think he’ll expect that kind of budget now for more projects. :O

Cindy I love the picture of your donkey! Actually I love your new bathroom and want to thank you for a valuable reminder- go with classic and what you love. We are suppose to move next month and I’ve gone back and forth on what to do in the new master bath. It’s beige. Like you- lots of color or classic? Classic it is! Beautiful guest bath!!!!!

    • September 26, 2019 / 10:54 am

I’m so excited Tammy that you found (were reminded) inspiration! That means maybe you’ll lose less sleep than I did. Congrats on the move. I don’t like moving but I sure do love new and having a blank slate! Can hardly wait to see it!!!

Bravo to the bathroom maestro! Take a bow. I can’t decide if the shower curtain or framed photo of Scout is my favorite. Love it all!

    • September 26, 2019 / 10:56 am

MY fave is definitely the photo of Scout. Although, I really think I’m going to move it so I can see it more often. I never go in that bathroom unless I’m cleaning it. Plus, I think this weekend I’ll add the fall pretties in there. Thank you Laura!

This is absolutely FABULOUS! The frame on the big mirror is probably my favorite! Congratulations on coming in under budget!

    • September 26, 2019 / 12:01 pm

Thank you Carlie! I want to just sit in there and enjoy it but I won’t. It’s seriously quite the transformation from before. Thanks for stopping by today!

Cindy what a DIYer you have become. I love the look of your bathroom. Love the idea about the frame on the mirror. Great idea. Everything looks so nice.

    • September 26, 2019 / 12:16 pm

Well, I ‘ll never hold a candle to you Terrie, that’s for sure, but I am proud of myself this time around. Thank you.

I love the knobs too. It’s crazy how something so small can make such a difference. Thanks for stopping by today!

    • September 26, 2019 / 1:30 pm

Thanks Stacey! I was so nervous about only having $100 but I’m amazed how far that can go!

I knew you could do it, your much too clever and so artistic, woohoo!!

    • September 26, 2019 / 4:20 pm

Awe, thank you Marlene! That means the world to me. I didn’t feel clever until I was adding up the total at the end. When I did though, I was all smiles!

Really enjoyed seeing how far you could stretch the $100! Great job. I’m stalling on painting a desk drawer to put up over my toilet; it needs to be reglued first. I want it for a decorative space, not useful. The dividers will go in backwards to make the shelves. $1 at a yard sale; got the paint with a c/o at Michael’s. I love stretching those dollars!

    • September 26, 2019 / 5:11 pm

Ooh, that desk drawer idea sounds fun and quite the bargain too! Hope you get it finished soon. Thanks for the sweet comment too. πŸ™‚

Thanks Melinda! One day the rest of the house will look as good as the guest bathroom! πŸ˜‚

Cindy, your guest bathroom turned out great. I love the lamp! and, of course, the picture of Scout. I love the paper~wrapped plant too. The tobacco basket looks wonderful with the stain color of the shelf. May I come stay?

    • September 26, 2019 / 11:30 pm

Absolutely Carol. But I will warn you… The guest bedroom needs to be next on the list of things to do! It’s in terrible shape considering we had 4 young adults here this summer! I’ll need another year, then you can visit! πŸ˜‚

Cindy! I love seeing the colors you used in your first home. So classy! The shadows on the walls caused by the globes add another color to your elegant pallet. The curtain and tie back are so beautiful, and of course exactly the right color for everything else (including knobs). Also, I adore that little donkey, and seeing her flour dipped face makes me grin. All of the things you re-used still draw compliments (classic black ribbon on the mirror looks great). Can’t wait to see it in person. Your mother must be so proud!

    • September 27, 2019 / 3:09 pm

Thanks Mommy Dearest. Sounds like she’s proud to me. Come on over!

  14. September 27, 2019 / 4:22 pm

I love your style! Hanging the frame over the large mirror was so clever! Your shelf looks beautiful. I wanted the same brackets from hobby lobby but i just needed too many!

    • September 28, 2019 / 10:00 am

Thank you Joy. I wanted to put up 2 shelves but because of the budget, I was only able to add 1 shelf. Thanks for visiting!

  15. September 28, 2019 / 9:58 am

I love the mirror on mirror and the lampshade is adorable. But how did you make that mirror stick? Great job.

    • September 28, 2019 / 10:02 am

The wall above the mirror has a nail. I added a black ribbon with a grommet in it and hung it around the frame. Hope that makes sense. Thank you Cynthia – I love it too.

  16. September 28, 2019 / 2:10 pm

It looks lovely! I’m sure you are going to have guests lining up now! I especially love the new color and shower curtain!!

    • September 28, 2019 / 2:49 pm

Thank you Morgan. I kinda don’t want anyone to go in there and mess it up! I should put a plexiglass screen in the hallway like at a museum and tell them – “Look with your eyes, not with your hands or butt cheeks”! But I guess that defeats the purpose of all that work, huh?!

  17. September 28, 2019 / 3:49 pm

I’m so impressed! It all looks amazing AND you came in under budget! Love all the decorative touches and that frame hanging on the mirror. Great job!

    • October 1, 2019 / 10:57 am

Thank you Meredith – I appreciate that. I wish I could have found some granite for a new counter but no such luck. But Christmas is coming and I’m a practical gift kinda girl so fingers crossed, I’m on Santa’s nice list?!

  18. October 7, 2019 / 4:20 pm

This looks amazing!!! I love what you decided to do with the mirror. I have never seen that done, and I love the twist. Also love the knobs you chose. So cute! And I’m pretty sure I made those exact same shelves (with the same brackets) in our basement bathroom last year πŸ™‚ (Great minds.) You did such a great job and I am SO glad you joined the challenge this round!

    • October 7, 2019 / 4:32 pm

Thank you Erin. I was so nervous about the small budget but you’ve shown me that I can stretch my brain and my power tool skills! Already looking forward to the next challenge. So glad you visited today.
