Farmhouse Trends For 2020

Spread the love

Happy New Year!  I’ll be saying that for a while.  I like it.  It makes me smile because I think of newness and change.  With newness comes new trends, right?  I’ve been getting emails and seeing tons of trends for 2020 like paint colors, whats in for wardrobes, kitchens, baths and even what’s out.  Well in all honesty, I couldn’t care less.  I decided a few years ago that what I like is what’s “in”.  However, I did some research and found some things that are trending for us farmhouse lovers.  So here are the Farmhouse Trends for 2020.

Farmhouse Trends for 2020

Most of these trends are going to make us feel sooooo good!  We’ve been doing these for years and the rest of the world has finally seen the light.  They realize the sweet simple life is it and what’s beautiful, meaningful and welcoming is actually “in style”.  Y’all, this is our year!

Trend Number One

Old and primitive kitchen tools – All the bread boards we have stacked against our back splashes and stacks of rolling pins are “in”!  Our wooden spoons and stools are rockin’ and trendy.  I guess that means we can keep hunting and collecting while telling everyone it’s okay, it’s in?  πŸ™‚

Trend Number Two

Painted kitchen cabinets – Do you have an all white kitchen?  Unfortunately, they are out even though I think white is a color.  Good news is, the change isn’t as costly as you might think.  If you want to change, try painting just the bottom cabinets or the dining hutch or the kitchen island.  I’ve loved all white kitchens for years and still do.  But my cabinets are cream colored with a glaze on them and we aren’t changing any year soon but my kitchen island might get a makeover.

Trend Number Three

Wood tone kitchen cabinets – I know, I just said painted cabinets were in but keep reading.  It’s not the shiny oak cabinets from 30 years ago but the natural looking cabinets instead.  They started becoming a thing about 3 years ago and I think they’ll finally catch on.  Think a rougher more rustic look or wood with a dull medium stain.

Trend Number Four

Brass and silver – I’m sure they’re talking about lighting fixtures and knobs but I have decided it’s the silver we have around the house that we cherish.  Like old trophies and trays or grandma’s tea set and mirrors.  I’m going with that since I still have the oil rubbed bronze knobs everywhere.  Sound good?  Yep.

Trend Number Five

Vintage Pottery – Yes, the organic, worn and chippy pots we have sitting around that we just love are totally trendy.  If you don’t have any, there are several ways to make new pottery look old.  Just look on you tube for a video or on Pinterest for a tutorial.  It’s easy!

Olive Trees on shelf[Photo By Ballard Designs]

Trend Number Six

Olive Trees – Lord have mercy (insert rolling eyes).  I have a very brown thumb and just last year I surrendered to the pressure and bought a Fiddle Leaf Fig anyway.  I babied that thing and it is now a single brown stalk.  Completely dead.  Sitting in super cute pot but still dead.  So if I have another day where I’ve checked out of reality and buy an olive tree, it will be fake.  Why can’t the powers-that-be or the famous “they said(ers)” tell us boxwood and topiaries are in because I will never give those up.  My fake ones are still looking good and are a favorite around here.

Trend Number Seven

Rattan or Cane Furniture – You will see this everywhere because in my opinion, it’s classic.  Like the chairs at a kitchen table, the stools, the outdoor seating on the porch.  Probably not the matching bed with side tables we remember from the 70’s.  The French style chairs are my fave but no matter what era, they have come up in the ranks baby!

Trend Number Eight

Warm Gray Walls – Gray isn’t necessarily out but you’ll want to warm it up a bit.  I call it taupe or greige.  Mindful Gray or Agreeable Gray by Sherwin Williams come to mind.  I guess they decided white walls with little kids was impractical or with a Mister that puts his grimy hands on everything isn’t either?  Who knows.

All I can say with these Farmhouse trends for 2020 is that I am so going to milk it and tell everyone and their neighbor that I’m finally all that and a bag of chips!  If you see me walking around Home Goods or Hobby Lobby tapping everyone on the shoulder telling them I don’t need to buy that because I already had it years ago, you’ll know why – I’m Trendy Cindy!  πŸ™‚

I’ve been called sassy before. I just say I like what I like and am old enough to be secure with myself. LOL πŸ˜‰

Fun post Cindy. When we picked our kitchen I went with all neutral wood tone maple. With all the white I felt maybe I shouldn’t have. Hey, I was three years early.

OOPPS! I still have the shiny oak cabinets from the late 80’s and STILL not ready to cover that beautiful wood grain with paint! I, too, have black thumbs and only have a few unkillable house plants left! And although Farmhouse style has definitely grown on me, beige, gray, taupe, tan, etc. are NEVER gonna be major colors in MY color pallette. Although my house may be quieter colors, the colors in my wardrobe POP! And are great accent colors! Color is one way for me to fight depression (along with meds, upbeat music, and judicious amounts of chocolate!).

    • January 8, 2020 / 11:45 am

I totally understand about color friend! The kitchen walls in my house in Highland Village are a bright (and I mean bright) blue. It’s a sunny happy place no matter what the weather. Stick with what you love no matter what the trends say. That’s what I do. πŸ˜ƒ. Thanks for the visit Kathy!

Tell it like it is, i love it, you are so fun to read, do not change. So glad you let me know cause now i can feel much better about not changing a thing and i love my farmhouse decor and yours too.

    • January 8, 2020 / 3:03 pm

Yep, I’ve never been one to shy away from my opinion – LOL. And some days we all need to feel better about our choices, right?! Even the scratch-your-head decisions. Boy have I had several of those “oopsies”. πŸ˜‰ Thank you Marlene for your sweet comment too. Made my day.

You know sometimes I don’t like what’s “of the moment” at all and other times…like now…I love it!! I love that we are mixing rustic things with beautiful things these days. I love the mix of painted cabinets and wood. Isn’t it wonderful that we can mix our grandmother’s silver with a cruddy ol’ stool? Yes I love it just like you do. πŸ™‚

    • January 8, 2020 / 5:24 pm

I’m like you when it comes to liking what’s in style. Most years, I don’t. And yes, it’s wonderful that when can we mix old silver with an old stool or even a new one and it look great. Farmhouse isn’t for everyone but that’s part of our God made individuality! πŸ˜‰

  7. January 8, 2020 / 5:48 pm

    Hello Cindy!
Love the mix of wood, blue and a splash of white and rustic and treasures from the past. Life is best when we surround ourselves with things we truly love!
Thanks for sharing the outlook for 2020!
    Jemma

    • January 8, 2020 / 5:57 pm

My pleasure Jemma and I totally agree! We should surround ourselves with things we truly love. I spent years buying crap because it looked good, was cheap, and filled the space but didn’t really like it. I finally figured out my style and love walking into our home. ❀️

Oh my! This totally brings back a memory of your youngest at 3 years of age calling to tell me β€œNana, sometimes some adults get mad at me, and I DON’T CARE!”. Wonder where that independent spirit came from? We are so blessed, because along with independence came good grace, good taste and good grief! You do you, Cindy. Nobody does it better! Happy New Year!

Addi is one of a kind and definitely her own person. I’ll keep doing me since I’m all that and a bag of chips now. πŸ˜‰

  9. January 10, 2020 / 6:52 am

Cindy I can’t keep an indoor plant alive to save my life either. Outside, I’m a Ninja! Thank goodness The Hubs remembers to water the two I have inside….if you find a good fake olive topiary sign me up! I just bought an old table with 6 french cane back chairs to redo so…. Yay! I sill love a white kitchen and plan on redoing the one in our new house in white. I love the look of the painted cabinets, but it’s too much work to change it. I KNOW I will get tired of the color. I can change a hand towel faster than I can paint. Thanks for the validation that what we love is in, but keep doing you girl I think it’s perfect!

    • January 10, 2020 / 12:07 pm

Thank you Tammy. I’m with you on the painting. I get tired of it quickly but am stuck like chuck. One of these days maybe I’ll get a neighbor that is a painter and wants to paint for the fun of it and use my house as a muse. LOL. Can hardly wait to see your new table and cane back chairs!!! Have a great weekend.

  10. January 13, 2020 / 8:01 pm

I love this. The vintage pottery is one of my favorites and the Olive trees. I want to try an olive tree. My house is filled with so many plants I hardly have room for more, but I love growing things. I also love the Rattan furniture. I have a guest bedroom with pieces. Thank your for sharing the trends.

    • January 13, 2020 / 8:46 pm

You are very welcome Deana. I’m jealous of your green thumb. I plan to get an olive tree too but girl, it will be faker than fake. Thanks for the comment and stopping by today. Hope you have a great week!

I love those cabinets. Beautiful choices. Everything is my favorite farmhouse decor in this post

Mine too Maria. It all makes me super confident this year! Have a great week.

It’s funny…what’s old is new again. When I was a young married woman, most of these things were ‘in’ at that time. It wasn’t even really considered a ‘trend’, it was just what people decorated with.

I know there are people who do, but I don’t follow trends. I decorate my home how I like, and if the magazines and influencer’s aren’t in sync with that, such is life. lol

It was called ‘country decorating’ at that time. Now it’s ‘farmhouse’ (which looks nothing like the farmhouse of old).

      • January 30, 2020 / 4:33 pm

I hear you. I’m more drawn to the old chippy authentic pieces (and look) but it feels weird to put that in a house built in the year 2000 that stands 20 feet from a neighbor! I’m thankful for the real deal. Guess we have to do our best making the old country decorating look new and fresh with farmhouse “style” decor. Glad you could visit and comment today! Hope you have a great weekend.

    • January 30, 2020 / 4:26 pm

Exactly Carole… Such is life! πŸ™‚ Sounds like you know what you like. It took me quite some time to figure that out. Years ago when I was first married, my decorating style was garage sale finds and hand-me-downs. Probably like most couples but it was fun for me to put it all together.
