I don’t like wasting money but I don’t like returning things that weren’t that expensive either. If I’m already going back to the store, then the return is no big deal. But what do you do when you are the person that damaged it? Ugh. It’s a bit frustrating to say the least. Thankfully this time, it’s not that bad. Not like the time I was 16 years old and went to visit my friend at Dillard’s department store on her very first day.
That was a damage doozy. She worked in the china department. Yep, you probably already know what I am going to say. We were just standing there chatting away and when I turned to leave, I was looking at my watch. So when as I was turning, I knocked over an entire display of china. In my defense, they shouldn’t do that. The displays should be on tables with a solid 4 legs. But this one wasn’t. Oh no. This one was a large round table with a glass base and a glass top.
When everyone in the vicinity turned to see what sounded like a car driving through the glass doors, there I was just standing there with my hands over my mouth. I wasn’t embarrassed really. I was actually freaking out thinking my parents were going to kill me. I didn’t see a solid dish on the floor. Even the table top had broken. The cost was just going up and up. How much was this going to be; one thousand, two thousand, five thousand?!
I wanted to cry. I think I was getting teary eyed when the sweetest, well dressed little old lady walked up to me and said “It will be okay dear. That’s what insurance is for.” I couldn’t believe my ears. She saved my life. My parents weren’t going to clobber me, ship me off to some other country never to be seen again. Okay, at least I wasn’t going to have to do chores for the rest of my life to pay this off. It was all good. That sweet little old lady didn’t even want me to help pick up the pieces.
I choose to think it wasn’t because I was already a menace or that she was afraid I’d break something else. I choose to believe that she didn’t want me to cut myself even though she was cleaning it up with a broom and dustpan.
Fast forward 35 years. Today all I did was touch my brand new white candles after picking up the soft waxy orange candles and then left yellow marks on the them that won’t come off. No biggie. I can do something about that. All I had to do was dig around in the fabric scraps, pull out the drop cloth and cut four strips the size of the white candle. Easy peasy lemon squeezy. Of course I used my fave double sided tape like with most projects but I wasn’t in the mood to figure out how to paint wax candles.
Here they are. A little rustic and frayed around the edges but they’ll do for now. I’ll eventually find cute paper to wrap them in but for now this works.
The moral of the story… Wash your hands before you pick up your inexpensive white candles and don’t go visit your friend on the first day of her new job. Thankfully they didn’t fire her for having a clumsy friend.
hahhaa…you are the cutest thing !!
I didn’t break anything like that when I was 16 but I did go into a drug store with a friend, and we saw several cute boys at the soda fountain and one of them was the one that made me feel all soft and fuzzy when I looked at him…I must have had stars in my eyes because as we were walking towards them, I ran into a tall display of Kotex boxes and they all went flying…..I was so mortified, I just turned and ran. My friend caught up with me and was laughing sooo hard. I never knew what the guys were thinking but my friend said they were all rolling on the floor, laughing.
I love your cute fix for your candles….

Oh my word, I’m dying over here. My sides hurt from laughing so hard! I can see that entire scenario. Thanks for making my day. 😂
Oh Cindy! That China event sounds like something I would do. Thank goodness for the sweet lady and insurance!!! Those white candles look better with the up grade. Great job.

Thanks Tammy! I think the candles look better too. 😀
I loved that story about you and Dillard’s! LOL! I would have freaked too. I think she didn’t want you to clean up in order to prevent even more damage bahahaha!! Btw, I love that little hack for the candles. I have a few that are stained as well.

Thanks Yami! We all try and live up to your crafty standards but will always fall short! 🙂. And yeah. That’s a day I will never forget.
These are cute even if there is nothing wrong with them and we won’t get into all the stuff i have done.

Okie dokie Marlene but now I’m dying to know! LOL.
Loved your story. We all have one (at least!). Loved your candle hack. I have covered candles in those sheets of honeycomb, decoupaged tissue paper with colored rubber stamped pictures or napkin pictures, added cinnamon sticks or bay leaves and a jute tie, and hit the candle gently with a blast from my heat gun to remelt dinged corners.
