Good morning friends! It’s time for Ten on the 10th again. This month the theme is Thrift Store Find and is hosted by Katie at Let’s Add Sprinkles.
A Broken Clock Project
What do you do with a broken clock that doesn’t really match the style of your home but it’s super cheap and you need a craft to do for Ten on the 10th? You fork out the money and turn it into something you like.
For me, if there’s something I generally don’t care for (except real people and pets) I just paint it. That’s usually a good start. Then I look at it and wonder what else it could transform into that will make me smile.
This one didn’t have a chance to be any color but white. Not because it’s my favorite color but because that’s the paint I had left over from another project. But I do love me some white chalk paint.
Here’s how I did it.
Step 1: I carefully removed the clock mechanism with muscles, a bit of teeth grinding and a flat head screw driver.
Step 2: Paint it with Rustoleum’s Chalked Paint in the color Linen White. BTW, I totally love this paint. Two quick drying coats and it’s soft, smooth and fabulous!
Step 3: Once the paint dried, I simply sanded a few areas.
Step 4: The Mister poked a hole into the center where I wanted the hook to hang.
Step 5: Twist the hook in and viola, you are done!
Super Easy!
I’ve already thought of so many cute little things to hang inside. The locket hanging in it for Valentine’s Day is the first necklace the Mister gave me back in high school!
Also back when I was in high school and matched my purse to my shoes and my earrings for fun occasions, I had these little bunny earrings. You should have seen me. I had a pink skirt, a bunny sweater, these earrings, a pink bag and pink shoes. Thank heavens it was the 80’s and I didn’t look THAT ridiculous.
I can’t believe I still have the earrings. I thought they would’ve been burned along with the evidence photo’s. I’m not sentimental. I’m never going to wear them again. And I donate or throw practically everything away when I’m finished with it. I seriously can’t even imagine how those earrings stayed hidden for so long.
But I’m glad they did! I’ll change the display it as it gets closer to Easter.
What else can you hang in a broken clock project turned classy frame cuteness? How about a small napkin ring that looks like a wreath? Or a precious photo in a small frame? Maybe a favorite brooch? At Christmas, I can add a tiny deer and a tiny tree with some snow at the bottom like you’d see in a snow globe. So many possibilities! I love it.
What a great way to use a clock! I love the story behind your heart locket and bunny earrings.

Well you know I love to repurpose things and I’m a blabbo. Thanks for the visit Paula! 🙂
Oh that is just precious! I love that little heart display! This was the perfect upcycle for Valentine’s Day.
Author
Thank you Susan. I am looking forward to finding new holiday items to hang inside. Should be fun!
Super cute!!!!!
Author
Thank you Kathleen!
Cindy, girl you knocked this one out of the park! I LOVE this project. I have a small clock that isn’t working (somewhere) that I will definitely make into something soon. You rock!
Happy Ten on the 10th!
Author
Woo hoo – “I’m a rock star”! Thank you Tammy. You made me smile today! Can hardly wait to see your upcycled clock too.
Love your take on the old clock. I like the white chalk paint and the idea that you can change the “ornament” for whatever season or holiday it is. That’s so clever – and downright cute! I like that heart shaped pan and the pink gingham heart on the tin also!
Author
Awe, thank you Barbara, I love hearing that. I was trying to think of the word to use for the little things inside and ornament is perfect! Thank you for commenting today!
I’ve been wanting to do this. The clocks at my thrift store are all $10.00. I’m too cheap to pay that for something I’m going to tear apart. This is just darling. Thanks for sharing with our Ten on the 10th group.
Author
$10, really? Shop over here. They are way cheaper than that! Thanks for hosting and the great theme this month! 😉
Love this idea!!
Author
Thank you Chris! Hop you have a wonderful Sunday.
This is a clever project. I love the locket and the fact you have been with your husband since high school. The 80’s were tragic for hair and fashion. I don’t know what we were thinking. I follow you on Instagram and popped over to follow your blog.
Love for you to visit my blog and follow along.
Enjoy your day
Cindy

Oh gosh yes. I’m already thinking back at some fashion choices from 2010 that are questionable! Must be why I’m so good at laughing at myself?! Thanks for popping over. I love hearing that and I look forward to seeing your blog! Already adore the name!
Hi Cindy, what a great repurposing of this old clock frame!!! LOVE IT! I like that you can hang anything inside and it instantly is showcased for display. <3 Happy to pin it to several boards and share; so glad to be with you on this 10 on the 10, Sweetie!
Have a great Valentine's,
Hugs,
Barb 🙂

Author
Thank you Benita, I love your sweet compliments. It’s hard to identify as “creative” but I’m trying. Happy Sunday!
What a sweet idea…..it will be fun to change this each holiday or season! This would also make a cute picture frame…..thanks for sharing

You are so sweet Jemma, thank you! You’ve been an inspiration to me. And yes, if the Mister would let me paint everything, I probably would! Big hugs, a wink and two thumbs up bloggy friend!
What a great project! Love that the look can be changed so easily for special days. We will all be hunting down mantle clocks at thrift stores now….
Author
LOL. Thank you Eilis! I hope you find one. Mantel clocks are in short supply around here. Happy crafting!
Ok now I need a broken clock 😂 you are so clever. Really love this and how you can change it for the season too
Author
Lol. You could always break one by “accident”! 😂 Thanks for commenting! They are like hugs. ❤️
I started thinking of all the things to hang and i don’t even have a clock yet, lol!! So so stink’n cute.
Author
LOL. That’s funny. Glad you like it. ❤️ Thanks Marlene!
I have a clock similar to yours and I’ve been debating what to do with it. I thought about a fairy garden, or putting a small succulent in it. I’m inspired now, Cindy. I think this would be a great way to show off some of my vintage ornaments. Thank you for the inspiration!
Author
Yay Ann! So excited to hear you were inspired. Hope to see what you do with yours. Vintage ornaments sound like a fantastic idea!
Are you kidding me? That broken clock project is stunning. What a sweet little project you made out of that. Good job! I had such fun shopping for a project with you, and didn’t think you would be able to beat your first idea, but Oh My! This is so original. ❤️
Author
LOL. I had fun too. Glad you like it. It will be fun to see what else I hang inside. I think next will be a little clover. For you know who. 🙂
Cindy, your thrifty project looks super cute, and I can envision all the other ways you described to use it. I need to check out the Rustoleum Chalk Paint. Thanks for the tip.
Happy Valentine’s Day,
Judith
Author
My pleasure Judith. You’ll love the paint. It’s less expensive than any I’ve tried and does a fantastic job of coverage. Enjoy!
Cindy this is such a cute and clever makeover! The heart locket is SO precious. Fun fact I think I had similar earrings in the 80’s. Have a love filled week.
Author
Thanks Laura. You had earrings like that if you were “stylin” like me. LOL.
Cindy, your hidden DIY skills are coming through again, girl. Great rescue, repaint and reuse project. Such a cute way to display little treasures. I bet we see this sweet makeover in other places in your home for different seasons and holidays. Pinning.
Author
Carol, thank you so much. That made my day! I’m smiling from ear to ear and yep, you’ll see it seasonally for sure.
Great makeover, Cindy! Love that locket in the center… and how much you will be able to do with it each season! Be sure to link-up at Homestyle Gathering, if you have a minute or two! 😉 Pinned!
Author
Thank you Julie. It should be fun and I already know what to do for St. Patrick’s Day! 🙂 Thanks for the reminder too. I’ll do it now.
So glad you shared on Homestyle Gathering! Hope to see you this coming Tuesday again… and looking forward to the challenge! 😉 (Can’t wait to see what you do for St. Paddy’s!)
Author
Thank you Julie and it was my pleasure sharing. St. Patty’s day is my youngest daughters bday. It’s all about her. 😄. But we do call her our little lucky charm. 🍀
That is an awesome makeover. I love it!! I really love the mementos you’ve hung inside. That’s the sweetest part of all. And you said you weren’t crafty! 😉
Author
LOL. I certainly don’t feel crafty. It doesn’t come easy for me. #theStruggleIsReal! But I appreciate your kind words anyway. Really! Thanks Kim
That is an absolutely adorable idea! Who knew that it was a clock in a previous life?
Author
Well thank you Rachel. Soon I’ll be changing that little heart to a clover. 🙂 Hope you have a wonderful weekend!
Cindy I too have one of these clocks on my shelf and I took the battery out because it was making way too much noise. It also clashes with my decor but now seeing what you did with yours you are definitely giving me some great ideas. Here’s to paint and transformations. The addition of the heart is a cute idea.
Author
Thanks Mary. I agree with you. Clocks can be noisy at times. Glad you like it. Hope you can turn your clock into something you enjoy. ❤️
Cindy I love to take something that is broken and make something else out of it. Your clock re-purposes is so darling. I love what you did with that old broken piece. Now it is so pretty and can display a lot of cute seasonal things.
Author
Thank you Terrie. I think repurposing things is my fave way to decorate. And I already have plans for a clover to hang next. 😉.
I love this! I am now on the hunt for a broken clock!!
Pinned!

Author
Glad you like it Tania. Hope you find the perfect clock. And thank you for the pin!
Excellent idea/hack! And I love that it’s used in a sentimental way! Now I’m on the hunt for an old clock.
I really enjoy your blog. ❤️
Author
Awe, it makes my day to know you enjoy the blog! Really! I like it when I come across something small but there’s not much I can do with it… I hang it in the clock!
Cindy, This is so fabulous!!! I am in awe of your creativity! I’m featuring it as a favorite post from the Valentine’s Day Link Party today over on White Arrows Home!
Author
Awe, thank you Kristin. That makes my day and I’m excited you think it’s fabulous! 🙂
Adorable! I have been (unsuccessfully, so far!) on the lookout @GW for a clock when it’s cheap. Making it a year-rounder is such a great idea!
Author
Thanks so much Kathy! Hope you find one soon. I am about to start a broken grandfather clock project! Fingers crossed it turns out fabulous. 😉
This is such a great idea! Plus the fact that it can be used year round is wonderful for those that are trying to minimize their holiday decor.
Author
Very true and something I’d like to do! Thanks for stopping by. Hope you have a wonderful weekend.
