A Lemony Summer Centerpiece Idea

Spread the love

Howdy Folks!  Hot yet?  Around here I feel it’s scorching!  But today is Pinterest Challenge Day and we are cooling it down with lemons!  If you are hopping over from Terrie at Decorate and More with Tip, welcome.  It’s great to have you.  I love this time of the month so let’s get started by turning beans into lemons with a lemony summer centerpiece idea.  πŸ˜‰

A Lemony Summer Centerpiece Idea

Did you read the word beans?  I’ll get to that in a second but first, this month our inspiration photo comes from Mary over at Home Is Where The Boat Is.  She makes the most beautiful tablescapes and centerpieces and this month is no exception.  Her photo screams summer time.  Just looking at it cools my hot sweaty head down by 10 degrees.

Home is Where the Boat Is – Lemon Centerpiece

As a quick reminder, all of us participating in the Pinterest Challenge use this same photo and turn it into something that works with our home and decor style.  The glass jar would have worked but I don’t have one even similar to Mary’s.

Collage of bean can DIY

Even a Bush’s Baked Bean can look like summer with a little craftiness

What I do have (don’t laugh) is a ginormous can of beans!  A 7 lb. 5 oz. can of Bush’s Baked Beans.  I know, you’re thinking how can a person love beans that much?  I don’t but the Mister does.  Not that he would eat that entire can (well maybe) but if you want to smoke some ribs and a brisket and have family over, this is the size can you need.  Plus, you know everything in Texas is bigger, right?!  LOL.

collage of mod podge lemon paper

Use Mod Podge and scrap book paper so the can looks lemony

What slapped a smile on my face about Mary’s arrangement was the lemons in the glass vase and the white and yellow flowers.  That’s my kind of summertime greeting.

After removing the label from the can I painted it with white chalk paint.  My first plan was to only put the paper on the front side.  When I finished using Mod Podge to glue on the scrapbook paper, I realized anyone seeing the back was missing out.  So I did the back side afterwards.  Don’t look to closely, the paper doesn’t line up exactly.  But I’m okay with it.  Remember, my life motto… It’s good enough.

Collage of making a twine handle

Use twine to turn a can into a bucket

Addison (my youngest) was home and she helped make a braided handle out of twine for the new and improved bucket.  Measure how long you want the handle then add about 5 more inches on each end so you have plenty to make a knot.  Place one strand about 6 inches longer than all of the others in the middle group.  Keep 3 inches on each end while braiding.

Drill holes and add handle

After braiding all 6 strands together, tie both ends in a tight knot.  Now it’s time to drill the holes in the sides of the bean can.  Use a drill bit that’s slightly larger than the one long strand in the braided handle.  Push it through making a knot on the inside to keep it secure.

Here is how it turned out.  Did you notice the can wasn’t white anymore?  I didn’t like it.  The white was plain and the paper didn’t stand out.  Black paint to the rescue.  At the beginning, it was all nice and even.  Almost professional.  Like something you’d buy at Hobby Lobby!

A girl can change her mind

Now you know – I am no professional painter.  The black edges look like I was drunk or on some heavy medication when I painted it.  Even though the lines are wobbly and some of the paper is painted too, I’m still going to use it.

Bee Skep with lemon centerpiece

After adding the real hydrangeas, sunflowers and greenery stems, I added faux lemon stems to accentuate the lemony paper on the can.  Does this lemony summer centerpiece idea look like Mary’s?  Close enough.  At least it looks like me; wobbly and a little disheveled.  And don’t say a word about not knowing how to arrange flowers.  That’s a needed class for future times.

One other thing I noticed about Mary’s post was she added bees to her tablescape.  I didn’t have bees but I have a couple of Bee Skeps!  A while back I made some.  If you’d like to see how, click here.  The items were from the dollar store and I made two skeps for less than $4.00.

Water glass with cut out lemon

I also have a DIY on how to make lemon slices look like decorative flowers and sunbursts.  I ran out of time or the lemons on the glasses in this post would be cut out too.  It’s super easy and you can see that DIY here.

Love how you added the braided twine handle; brilliant idea! btw…we used to have a saying, “cool beans”. That could be the name of your arrangement!

    • July 28, 2020 / 9:16 am

That’s funny Lora. I hear the Mister still saying cool beans. I’ll tell him he’s out of date. πŸ˜‰ We have a saying around here. He’s only allowed to eat 239 beans. He can’t get to 2farty. LOL. Yep, I went there. My dad taught me that!

So adorable! I missed the bee skep how-to so I am eager to try it. I just bought some lemons from the $1 section at Target and know I have a project to incorporate them!

    • July 28, 2020 / 9:42 am

Thanks Melinda! The bee skep was easy and I’ve enjoyed putting them in different places. And those lemons will look fantabulous in your new kitchen! Enjoy!

  9. July 28, 2020 / 9:53 am

I love your lemony arrangement, Cindy! And I would not have even noticed any wobbly lines if you hadn’t mentioned it. What are you talking about not knowing how to arrange flowers? It’s gorgeous! Girl, you and I are too hard on ourselves! The braided handle on the lemon bucket is perfect, too! Great job! Miss being with you all this month! Pinned!

    • July 28, 2020 / 4:35 pm

Thank you Julie. I think I’m hard on myself because I’m the only one in the house that isn’t a perfectionist. If you saw how long it took me to put those flowers in there, you’d think I’d lost it! Missed you too. Hope you heal quickly!

Love your lemon πŸ‹ centerpiece!!! The black paint really made the papers pop and the not perfect lines area great – it makes it more homey!! Thanks for sharing!!

    • July 28, 2020 / 4:38 pm

Thank you Loretta but I think you left out an “l” in your description… Homely, not homey. LOL Just kidding! I think the black paint looks waaaaay better than the white.

  14. July 28, 2020 / 12:29 pm

At first glance I thought your cute container was an ice bucket. Fooled me lol! Love how you made it from a can and layered the patterned paper. Darling arrangement and table Cindy!

    • July 28, 2020 / 4:42 pm

Someone else said it was a paint can. Surprise! πŸ™‚ I’m glad to have recycled such a doozy of a can. One less thing in the landfill. Hmmm. I think I’ll make more! Thank you Michelle

  15. July 28, 2020 / 12:36 pm

Great idea for your container. Love what you did with the recycled can. Looks like you went out and purchased it. Your flowers are beautiful. Love your table too!

    • July 28, 2020 / 4:46 pm

Really? You think it looks purchased?! That makes my day, Terrie, thanks! All I see are the imperfections. Oh wait, you mean it looks like I purchased it from China. LOLOLOL! I get it now. Thaaaaanks. πŸ˜‰

  16. July 28, 2020 / 1:32 pm

You totally tricked me, Cindy! I thought for sure that your floral container was an ice bucket. I was thinking, “I love that ice bucket, wonder where she purchased it.” Then I how you cleverly made it using a bean can. Adding the braided twine handle to the can is a great idea. This challenge was so much fun and I’m enjoying reading all of the posts shared today.

    • July 28, 2020 / 4:50 pm

You and Michelle thought the same thing about the ice bucket! Ha ha. Barbara thought it was a paint can. Hmmm, maybe I should start making ice buckets?! I can’t. I’d lose sleep thinking people would be disappointed and return them. I’m looking forward to reading them all here in a bit. πŸ™‚ Thank you Paula!

  17. July 28, 2020 / 3:33 pm

Thank you Rachel! It was so fun to make. It’s on the breakfast table so I enjoy it every day. And so far, the flowers are holding up well!

  20. July 29, 2020 / 9:42 am

Your beans can turned planter is AWESOME! I love the the little rope handle. I think this looks so summery and a patriotic one would be cute too, paint it white and use some patiotic paper.

I think your flower arrangement is beautiful!

I love those lemon slices and how they look on the glasses. So refeshing! I will definitely check out that post.

Thanks for hosting this fun hop!

  23. August 3, 2020 / 12:57 am

I love this Cindy! What a great idea for a container. Who would of thought to use a can of beans!

    • August 3, 2020 / 1:02 am

Who would have thought? A lady who likes spending the least amount of money as possible and may have had a crafty bug that day. Does that make me sound cheap? LOL! Thanks Kim!
