Redesigning is one of my favorite ways to save money and feel like I have new surroundings.  Changing my atmosphere without spending money gives me a sense of satisfaction and joy.  Sometimes it feels like I have a brand-new home. and I enjoy the process immensely!  Today I’m joining Marty from A Stroll Thru Life and have for you 3 ways to redesign your home and a fresh new summer tour.  Doesn’t that sound like fun?  Why yes, yes it does.

3 Ways To Redesign Your Home And A Fresh New Summer Tour

If you’re new here, I hope you find a few fun ideas and encouragement because that’s why I’m here.  To encourage and share with you ways to love the home you have and spend as little money as possible.  Everything is expensive these days so let’s not go crazy.

We have two homes to decorate which can be daunting and costly.  By changing things out and moving furniture from one room to another keeps the cost way down and my heart happy.  Let’s get started with how to accomplish a redesign.

The first thing I do is make a list (by room) of things I want to change.  It could be the color, the furniture layout, the lighting, the clutter; lots of things.  Then I make a list of things that could possibly work in another room.

Our kitchen cabinets are a creamy white color and in need of new paint.  They are 24 years old and have several chips.  But because there’s a chocolate glaze as a top coat there’s no way to retouch them without looking like a giraffe.

However, we did paint the kitchen walls with Sherwin Williams – Privilege Green #6193.  I was so shocked at the difference in the entire kitchen that I went a little crackers with greens and added touches of it in all the rooms.  In this case, a little crackers is fine.  Why?

Because in the design world there’s a rule.  It’s the 60/30/10 rule that helps you choose and pair colors to create the perfect color palette for any space.  60% is the dominant color, 30% is your secondary color, and 10% is the accent color.  It’s all about maintaining a perfect balance of tones and it keeps your home looking cohesive and well put together.  So, even in redesigning a space, keep that easy rule in mind.  But don’t think you can’t break the rule.  😉

Redesign Idea #1 – Move your tables around

Okay, back to the 3 ways I redesigned my dining spaces this season.  The first thing on my list was to tie the two eating spaces together since they flank the kitchen and it’s new smoky green walls.  So the first thing I did was switch out the tables and chairs.  That’s idea number one.  Move your furniture around.

Simply switching the tables changed everything!  I’m not sure why I didn’t do it years ago.  The black table looks much better with the black mantel and the white table looks like it should have been there from the beginning because of the white sofa in the family room.  Even the Mister likes it.

Be practical when decorating.  Keep things out that you actually use.

Redesign Idea #2 – Change out your wall art

Idea number two is moving artwork around.  I always buy large pieces.  Mostly because small things start to look cluttered and I prefer my clutter to be dirty socks on the hubby’s side of the bed or the stack of mail on the kitchen counter (insert rolling eyes) that someone says needs to be shredded.  Tell me why it needs to pile up before shredding when the shredder is 20 feet away?

Details matter like the subtle colors in the mirror.  

When choosing pieces for the walls don’t be afraid to layer things or hang items that are unusual.  It’s one of ways your home will be uniquely you.

Redesign Idea #3 – Change out accessories

When you shop your home, look for things that may not be considered an accessory.  I’m probably more practical about my home than most.  I also have quite the plate collection so any chance I get to show them off, I will.  If you’ve kept a collection in your family room, move it to the dining room and see how you like it.  And your collection doesn’t have to stay together.  You can spread it out to create charming character in little pockets throughout your home.

Plates, napkins, and silverware help add color and are in easy reach when needed.

I’ve always thought mixing old stuff with new finds is the best way to go when it comes to creating a space that seems cozy and curated.  Especially when trends come and go.  And what if you don’t want to spend money on a lot of crap that could one day go to your kids?  Particularly if your kids have expressed more than once they don’t want it.  But that’s an entirely different post (there goes the eye rolling again).

Use a vintage creamer with candles instead of stacking it in a cabinet.

I hope you found some inspiration with my 3 ways to redesign your home and a fresh new summer tour.  I’ve been in a slump for a while now so painting the kitchen and redesigning the spaces a little bit is exactly what I needed.  I’m a homebody already and now that 3 rooms look totally different and are on a whole new level of cozy, it’s harder to get me to leave.  Oh darn.
