When you walk into your bedroom, what is the reaction you get?  Is it a feeling of comfort, coziness, or relaxation?  If not, it could be where your bed is located in your room.  Maybe you prefer romantic, pretty, spacious, or carefree?  Whatever your desire, bed placement plays a crucial role in that decision.  Here are 7 bed placement ideas for your bedroom.

7 Bed Placement Ideas For Your Bedroom

Not all of us have multiple options when it comes to placing our beds.  The size of the room, windows, doors, storage needs, and overall size of the bed are all factors when deciding.  That being said, here are my suggestions to begin to transform your space into a place you enjoy coming home to.

Idea #1:  When you enter the bedroom, you want to have an open area.  A space void of other furniture.  No one likes bumping into things while trying to enter so putting your bed across the room and away from the main door is a good idea.  Even if your room is extra small, leave as much room around the doorway as possible.

Idea #2:  Avoid blocking any doors.  Not only is this very unpleasing to the eye, it can be inconvenient and annoying.  If the door isn’t used and is your only option, I recommend painting the door and door frame the same color as the wall so it is less noticeable.  But better yet, hang a wall of curtains or a large tapestry behind the bed to cover the eyesore.  I’ve seen people try and incorporate it into a collage of pictures.  That doesn’t work well.

Idea #3:  Set your bed facing the main entrance to the bedroom.  For example, if you are lying at the head of your bed, you should see your feet then the door.  This is called the commanding position.  People who love symmetry prefer it this way and experts maintain seeing the foot of a bed is always the most inviting.

Idea #4:  However, if that’s not doable, place it on a right (or left) angle.  This works because you can still see the door but you aren’t immediately visible to anyone who walks by giving you a bit of privacy without closing the door.  It’s especially nice in a dorm room.

Idea #5:  If you don’t possess a large empty wall across from the doorway and all you have are windows, then in front of the windows it is.  For some, it feels unsafe (think scary-movie-safe) or exposed.  If safety is important, opt for a tall headboard or curtains behind the bed.  If light is crucial, use a low headboard or an open iron bed.  Just don’t use only the glass windowpane as your headboard.  That is definitely unsafe.

Idea #6:  Placing your bed in a corner diagonally is an option.  It can create a focal point and be unexpected but it’s not very practical when space is needed.  Think about how much room you have on either side for bedside tables.  Which way will they face?  Is it easy to plug-in your phone or grab a bottle of water while laying in bed?  Putting your bed in the corner can be whimsical and worth a try if you have the extra space but most likely you’re going to be moving it again in a few days.

Idea #7:  If all you can do is place the bed right next to the entrance you can make the most if it by putting a bedside table closest to the door leaving more space in the walkway.  Also consider placing a mirror directly across from the door so you an see who is walking in.  If you don’t have any room for bedside tables next to the bed, pull your bed away from the wall and add a thin console table behind.  If that doesn’t work, a reachable shelf doesn’t allow for sitting up in bed so consider hanging a shelf on the wall closest to the bed for your necessities.

Remember, when designing anything, trust your gut.  Even though these 7 bed placement ideas for your bedroom are helpful they are also suggestions.

The best placement and direction of your bed comes down to your comfort and personal preference.  That should matter more than anything else.  Plus, you can always try it for a few days and rearrange it again if you don’t like it.  Just make sure you have some pizza ready for the helpers.  ๐Ÿ˜‰

I love your ideas and reasons for placing them in different places. Next time I decide to move my bed these will be helpful, which is usually every 5-6 years, cause I just can’t make up my mind, haha!

LOL Marlene! I am sad that our bedroom has only one spot that works. Boring! And at the farmhouse only one of the two guest rooms has choices. They aren’t working for a girl who likes change. ๐Ÿ˜‰ Thank you.

Fun post Cindy! There’s lots of inspiration in these beautiful bedrooms for me to study, even if I can rearrange our bedroom.

Thank you Michelle. Even though I’m on a kick to change things up in our bedroom, I cannot rearrange the furniture. But I’m up for the challenge of making it different! Stay cool friend.
