Here in Texas between May and September, everything is hot. At least I think so. Some years are different but for the most part, things heat up slowly and then burn you into oblivion. I’m sure you’ve heard the saying it’s hot enough to fry an egg on the sidewalk. Well during the summertime, they’re not wrong. I want my home to keep me feeling cool and comfortable. To create that feeling, here are 5 easy decorating ideas for a soothing summer family room.
5 Easy Decorating Ideas For A Soothing Summer Family Room
I’ve always tried to keep my home cohesive in color. That alone produces a better me and a better attitude. There’s something psychological about it. It’s like when there’s a lot of clutter. Plain and simple, I’m grouchy. So my goal is to maintain harmonious spaces throughout.
Easy Idea #1 – Choose a color that is soothing to you.
I do that by choosing a color that is tranquil. For many people, summer decorating means bright yellow and orange like citrus fruits. Sometimes different shades of blue are popular, especially if you love the ocean or crave being in a pool. This year since the kitchen is green, my accent color is green.
Hint: Maintaining a neutral starting point makes change easy. So when I chose green as my accent color, things easily fell into place.
Easy Idea #2 – Shop your home and trade out lamps, pillows, throws or curtains.
Look at your home decor from other rooms, in the closets, or in the attic and pull out everything in your chosen color. You can mix different shades of the same color. For instance, green makes up a forest but not many leaves are the same exact color.
Easy Idea #3 – Keep the other pieces in your room light and airy
Remember to keep things light and airy for a cooler feeling. Like the console table with its lighter wood and the handmade house collection. Or the ottoman with a white tray used as a side table instead of a heavy wood table. Shop the house and switch out the darker pieces.
Easy Idea #4 – Bring the outdoors in.
Bringing the outdoors in is always a great summer vibe so add plants no matter what accent color you decide. If you can’t do the real deal, faux works well too. I mix mine just in case the real one dies. And I won’t spend a lot of money on plants because under my care they will die.
Easy Idea #5 – Spread the accent color around the room.
Make sure your accent color isn’t concentrated to one wall or area of the room. Doing this keeps your room from looking cluttered or overwhelming. You want bits and pieces spread around. In my family room, I have green curtains, greenery on the mantel, a green chair, green items on the cubby shelf, in pillows, on the tables, with vases, with the chair, etc.
Using these 5 easy decorating ideas for a soothing summer family room can spill over into the rest of your home if you want it that way. The dining room has the same colors but a distinctively different vibe. I actually enjoy that. A lot of people don’t want contrasting atmospheres but I guess that’s what makes me, me. ๐
Remember to do what you love and create your own niche. Happy decorating friends.

Found that pillow at The Painted Tree. Do you go to the one in North Richland Hills? That store is way different than ours. I actually like it much better. Thanks Michelle.

I’ve never liked the summers in Texas and I ask myself all the time why we still live here. The answer – the mister loves Texas, the kids are here and none of them mind the heat so I’m stuck. Already hoping September is cooler than expected. Thank you Marlene. Stay cool!
These are great tips for any time of the year! We’re getting ready to refresh our living/family room and I will definitely be keeping this post in mind! Thank you!
