IDEA #1 – MAKE A LIST
No one likes to feel overwhelmed or start a project just to plop down in frustration. Start by making a list of your favorite areas of the house. Is it the family room, the porch or possibly your bedroom? Maybe family is coming and you need to work on the guest room this year or the area surrounding the fold out couch?
Sanctuary Home Decor
For me, the front porch is a priority so it’s at the top of my list. We all need a little something festive to greet us as we come home. If you come through the back of the house, maybe that’s on your list. Neither space has to be over the top unless you want it to be.

If you prefer, just add a wreath or garland over the door. If you have room, add a small tree and fill a lantern with pinecones, candles or ornaments to make a gorgeous statement. Having a small porch is so nice because the options are endless and budget friendly.

If you have a larger porch, you can create coziness by adding pillows and blankets to any seating. Something else that creates coziness is depth. Build “walls” as you walk to the door. In the photo above Lindsey uses wood accents like a sleigh and a wood tree to create them. And now that the days are getting dark early, try to add lights. They make all the difference and can change even a curmudgeon into someone more blissful.

IDEA #2 – MAKE YOUR ACCESSORIES WORK FOR YOU
Next, reevaluate your existing decor! It can seem overwhelming when you are already making room for a Christmas tree. Then, if you store everyday accessories for greenery, extra candles, etc., it can be down right exhausting. Before you start an overhaul, put your principle decor to work for you.

Can you use the lantern that is always out as a centerpiece? How about using those books as risers or bases for candles? Switching out the stems in the basket that hangs over the mantel all year round works wonders too. Remember, you liked how the piece’s felt on a daily basis, keep that cozy feeling by making just a small change for the holidays to keep decorating less stressful.

IDEA #3 – ADD MORE GREENERY
Want to make a big impact with little effort? Go crazy with greenery! Add small pieces of greenery on items like lamps, lanterns, tops of frames or mirrors. Hang it on door handles or on kitchen cabinet doors.

Give the mantel or a book shelf a boost with garland. All that greenery is like walking into a well-loved plant store and being greeted by a giant hug.

Did you see anything in these 3 Cozy Christmas Decorating Ideas To Help Keep Your Sanity? One last tip – For me, it’s all about making a plan and sticking to it. Use what I already have and stay out of the stores until I’ve exhausted my ideas. Hope you enjoy the creating and aren’t overwhelmed. Take it slow, put on some Christmas music and light your favorite candle.
Such great ideas, Cindy!! I’m planning on adding a ton more greenery into my home this Christmas season, just because it’s easy and looks pretty:) Thanks for sharing your tips!!

I love lots of greenery but don’t usually put in a lot. Hoping to this year as well. Our homes will be so beautiful! Enjoy the process. π
Yes, making a list and using your beloved Winter/ Christmas decor is a good start. What I do is placed them in different spots so it looks like you have different decor. Sometimes I do place certain items in the same spot..you just have too…lol!! I liked looking at the different ideas..so pretty.. Yep got to get on it!!

Great tip Lorri! I try and move things around so it looks different from year to year. The Christmas trees are a bit hard to move around but I do love change. Have fun decorating!

Thank you Debra. I’ll have to do a bedspring idea post then. I have lots of ideas. π
All great ideas! I am wondering however, if I create a sanctuary home, does it need to be in a sanctuary city? Because Iβm not going thereβ¦π

The benefit to being you is YOU get to do whatever YOU want. π
Hi, I do think I will drag out some silver pieces to use on the buffet. I hate polishing, and some will be just patina…but I love the candles in them as you have shown. Besides I won’t have to buy a thing to do it. REDO and REUSE! My forever motto, now in this day and age of buy, buy, buy.
Thanks for the lovely photos and post, Sandi

I’m with you Sandra… stop buying and start reusing and repurposing! I try and do that as much as possible but sometimes something so cute pops up and I just can’t help it. Usually it’s an antique piece so I justify it by saying I’m still reusing it. π
I love all the pretty greenery and how you used it. I always put on Christmas music to decorate, it makes it so fun.

I love Christmas music. Everything from Bing Crosby to Mariah Carry (sp?). Happy decorating Marlene!
So many lovely settings. Thank you for sharing.

I’m loving your mantel pic with black, white and green. Feeling the subtle vibes this year. Still just in the thought faze, though! Great tips.

Thank you Lora. Would it be terrible if all I did was bare trees and greenery everywhere? That’s the vibe I’m feeling. π
Yes to all these fabulous ideas, Cindy! Starting with a list is so key and I love the greenery tip too. It goes a long way and feels festive throughout the holiday and winter seasons too. Same with ribbon – you can never have too much π Can’t wait to see what you have cooked up this year. No doubt it’s going to be crazy amazing! Big hugs, CoCo

I don’t know about crazy amazing. I have a boot on my left foot for the next 6 weeks in hopes I don’t have surgery. :/ Bare trees and greenery might be all I muster up this year. Thanks for the sweet compliment and confidence! Fingers crossed I do anything – LOL.
