Spread the love

Hello Friends!  Today is something new for me.  You know I love change and decorating but this is a lot of pressure.  I’m taking the $100 Room Challenge – One month, one room, $100!  I missed the first post because September is my birthday month.  It’s all about me the entire month!  Except for 09/05.  The Mister gets to share that day because it’s our wedding anniversary.  So last Wednesday crept up fast and passed me up.  Erin at Lemons, Lavender, & Laundry is our host and cheer club director.

The way I see it, now that I’m typing out these words, there’s a commitment to uphold.  Yikes, 2 weeks.  I’m so nervous!

$100 Room Challenge Guest Bathroom Goals

I’ve decided to work on our guest bathroom because well, let’s all say it together, it’s builder beige.  The plan was to do something 10 years ago but because the walls aren’t dog puke yellow like so many others in our home, it turned into being an it’s-fine-for-now-project.  Yes, 10 years is a long time but apparently we’re snails around here.  Thankfully the guest bathroom is teeny.  If you can see in the picture, there’s a shower on the left side.  When the Mister and I were looking to buy this house, we had walked into that bathroom twice before ever noticing the shower since it sits behind the open door.  Side note:  This may be the only view you ever get.  Standing as far as I could get on the right side, I still couldn’t get even half the shower door in the picture.

Goal #1.  Paint the beige walls

Even though they aren’t a color that burns the eyes, to me they are b.o.r.i.n.g.  And if I’m about to paint, it’s going to be a color I adore.  You’ve heard me say this before, I’d rather scrub a public bathroom with a toothbrush than paint.  No kidding.  I’d like to go with a darker color since it’s rarely used. I’ll choose that tomorrow.  I do know that whatever color I choose needs to last for at least another decade and work with all seasons.  You know for my seasonal decorating obsession.  And because we’ll probably never paint it again.

Goal #2.  Add Storage

The only storage we have is that one small cabinet under the sink.  That’s where I store the towels for guests to use, the floor mat, the toilet paper and cleaners.  Yuck.  No one has complained but I’m sure they’d rather feel like they were in a comfy hotel where the towels were easily accessible.  So at least one shelf, maybe two if I can afford it, will be hung above the toilet.  A shelf similar to these in the photo above that I found on Life on Shady Lane.  We made some for the farmhouse in Navasota so I know they will be fast and easy.  Plus, I really like that look.

Goal #3.  Deal with the mirror

I cannot remove the mirror because it’s glued to the wall and I’m afraid it will rip a hole in the sheet rock if we were to take it off.  So I’m going to have to come up with something different to make it look better.  I usually hang an empty frame over it and have enjoyed it but I’m thinking a quick lesson on using the miter saw is in my future.  I saw this from Saw Dust Sisters and think I can easily do it.  Yippee – power tools!

Goal #4.  Accessorize and Deodorize

The little things are my favorite part.  I plan to add knobs to the cabinets if the $100 budget allows but I also need to accessorize the room.  If I don’t find something from around the house that will work, I’ll make a trip to the Goodwill store.  Unless, someone wants to donate to the cause?!  I’ll definitely get some good smelly soap and a candle too.

A Wish!

I’d like a new countertop but I don’t think that’s happening this go ’round.  However, I do plan to stop by the granite yard and see if they have any remnants that will work.  The Mister is quite handy and installation should be a breeze.  Hmmm, decisions decisions.

Well that’s it.  That’s my $100 Room Challenge Guest Bathroom goals and a wish.  Do you have any suggestions for me?  Any paint colors I might check out?  Click on the blue link button below to see what the other bloggers are doing with their $100!

Looks like a great room to tackle for the challenge! A little bit of paint is going to make a huge difference, I’m sure. Can’t wait to see how it all comes together!

When I told my hubby what I was doing, he said, whaaaat – we’re painting it? What’s wrong with it? insert rolling eyes. LOL. I’m anxiously awaiting how it all comes together too Alayna. Thanks for the visit!

I think framing the mirror is going to look great! WE have done that in every bathroom and we love the results. Excited to see you outcome!

Thanks so much Jen. I’m excited too and hope the $100 goes further than I think it will! πŸ˜‰

Your bathroom plans sound great! That’s impressive that your husband could install a granite countertop! That’s beyond both my and my husband’s abilities. I updated my bathroom’s mirror with a DIY frame without a miter saw last spring – for the life of me, I don’t know where I put ours! I used decorative molding with square wood rosettes in the corners from Home Depot.

    • September 11, 2019 / 5:39 pm

The rosettes in the corners sound like a great idea Lauren! If this doesn’t work out, I’ll keep that in mind. When I told the Mister what was happening, he wasn’t all that thrilled. Too bad, so sad. lol!

Cindy this is fun. I think a frame around the mirror will be great. Two weeks is Yikes for sure but you will make it beautiful. Looking forwar to seeing the changes.

Cindy your guest bathroom is going to look amazing. I agree with you decisions are the hardest part. I love the inspirational shelving. That will look awesome. I am sitting here laughing when you said you don’t like to paint and what you would rather do. ha! Love it! Happy painting my friend!

    • September 11, 2019 / 9:29 am

Thank you Terrie. I hope amazing is a good description after it’s all said and done. I’m not looking forward to the painting. Bleh. Maybe we just won’t have any close up photo’s because of the edge lines . LOL! You know I’m the “good enough” girl! πŸ™‚

    • September 11, 2019 / 10:37 am

Thank you Elizabeth! Fingers crossed it all works out and within budget!

  6. September 11, 2019 / 10:20 am

Well, I’m breathing a sigh of relief as I thought the reveal was next week. I have one more week. More time to procrastinate. LOL

Oh those shelves are REALLY good! I also LOVE that mirror surround! We are going to frame out our mirror too. By we I mean Mr. Decor. He’s super excited about this challenge. I bet he and Mr. 407 are both thrilled.

If you get ANY photography secrets pass them on.

    • September 11, 2019 / 11:47 am

LOL Laura! You sound like me – another week to procrastinate! And yep, the Mister is thrilled. I hope “we” didn’t bite off more than our chompers can handle. Hahahahha! I’ll ask James about the photography for sure. πŸ˜‰

    • September 11, 2019 / 11:48 am

Thanks Rebecca. Me too. Now I won’t be so concerned when I actually have a guest use the guest bathroom! πŸ˜‰

  7. September 11, 2019 / 11:37 am

Cindy, I can’t wait to see what you do with the guest bathroom. I bought some shelf boards in great condition at the Restore for .99 each. They come in different lengths and widths. They are stained, but I plan to paint mine.

    • September 11, 2019 / 11:49 am

Dang Carol. That’s a deal. I need to check out a store like that. We don’t have any of those around us. I look forward to seeing what you do with your shelves!

  8. September 11, 2019 / 11:46 am

Wow girl! I love where this bathroom is going. I’ve updated both of our guest room baths except the counter tops. Would love to see what you come up with there. Let me know if you find a good deal. I need one! lol

    • September 11, 2019 / 12:06 pm

Will do Tammy but sadly I don’t think the counter top is getting done unless I happen to drive behind a truck where a nice piece of counter top falls off and keeps on going unbeknownst to them! πŸ˜‚

  9. September 11, 2019 / 1:25 pm

I agree that it is so hard to start the painting but I am always so happy that I did it. I think this room is going to be beautiful!

    • September 11, 2019 / 2:35 pm

Thanks so much Sherry. No matter what I get accomplished in the next two weeks, it will be better than before! Now to get motivated!

I think you will do a fantastic job. Me too painting is not a fav but i do it and then i am so happy. I can’t wait to see what you have done, i have faith in you and know you can do it!!

    • September 11, 2019 / 5:41 pm

Marlene, thank you, your faith in me is giving me more confidence! And I need it. I’m still questioning my paint choices. :0

I can’t wait to see what you do!!! Wow $100 what are you going to do with all the extra money πŸ˜‚

    • September 11, 2019 / 5:43 pm

LOL Barbara! I don’t think there will be a penny left. Mine won’t look as good as the one you just finished but it won’t be a beige box anymore!

    Cindy,
You go girlfriend! What a great opportunity to change it up and make it into something really sexy! How about going for a dramatic black paint (or deep charcoal maybe) on the walls? Something really “moody”. How about painting the light fixture a gold or something dramatic? There is a company that specializes in mirror frame outs (Mirrormate) – maybe they can send you out something cool in exchange for a mention or sponsorship (if that is allowed). The granite boneyards are great too — maybe they can find something wonderful in a really nominal range (you will mention them of course) since the area is super small! I can’t WAIT to see the results!

    • September 11, 2019 / 5:46 pm

Goodness gracious Penny, now I’m even more confused! I’d love to contact mirrormate.com. Have had friends use them before and they are so easy to install! Fingers crossed on the granite too. I’ve got a lot to do with this tiny budget. Thanks so much for the encouragement though – I needed it!

Good Luck! I know it will look great. Everything you do turns out to be adorable!

    • September 11, 2019 / 5:47 pm

Thanks Melinda. I won’t get to do all that I want but it will be much prettier than it was!

  14. September 13, 2019 / 8:04 am

I can’t wait to see what you do in here, I love all your ideas! And I got a kick out of “accessorize and deoderize”! πŸ˜‚

    • September 13, 2019 / 9:11 am

Thank you Meredith. It’s definitely a challenge! πŸ˜ƒ

  15. September 13, 2019 / 9:40 pm

Happy birth month! Time goes SO fast! We’ve lived in our house for 6.5 years and I’m really wondering how it can be that long already!! I am working on painting this weekend. We can spur each other on. For this challenge I decided it would be a good idea for getting my master bedroom painted. I know I will be SO glad when it’s done, but painting isn’y my favorite thing to do either. Your bathroom is going to look great!

    • September 14, 2019 / 4:06 am

Thanks so much Morgan! And yes, we can spur each other on! I dread the painting like nothing else. πŸ˜‚

  16. September 18, 2019 / 2:54 pm

First off… happy birthday AND happy anniversary! What a fun month for you! I am so excited to see what you decide to do with this space. You have some great ideas (love the idea of framing the mirror)… and I totally hear you on painting. I can handle painting furniture, but walls are awful. I always blast some music, which seems to help. So excited to have you joining in on the challenge!

    • September 18, 2019 / 5:07 pm

Thank you Erin. I can hardly wait to see the transformation and decorate it for fall! Might be my new bathroom instead of the guest bath! πŸ˜‰

  17. September 20, 2019 / 5:24 pm

This project looks like it’ll be so fun – the mirror frame would be great! I read these backwards, so already know about your shower curtain, but I’m dying to see what comes next! πŸ™‚

    • September 20, 2019 / 8:54 pm

Next week is the reveal. Fingers crossed I’m finished and under budget! I have champagne taste and a root beer budget. Lol. Just kidding. My problem is being like Varuka Salt – I want it all!
