Spread the love

It’s almost Mom’s Day!  A day to celebrate the thousands of meals cooked, the laundry, the sleepless nights, the songs serenaded, the books read, carpooling, prayers upon prayers, and the hard work of our moms.  But I’m a mom as well and I want to be thanked and hugged and gushed over too.  So in honor of you and me, let’s have a Mom’s Day Tea Party Without the Tea.

A Mom’s Day Tea Party Without The Tea

Why no tea?  Because I’m a tall plastic cup of sweet iced tea kinda girl but I still like the pretty cups and saucers with all the dainty stuff that goes along with it.

Having a tea party without hot tea sounds a bit strange I know.  But so does hot tea in the middle of a hot spring or summer day in Texas.  I’ve tried it a few times but to be honest, a woman of my age that doesn’t quite glow in a flattering way, shouldn’t really be adding anything warm to her core body temperature.  Am I right?

Recently, my friend Barbara had a couple of us over to her new home.  The name of her blog is French Ethereal which to me sounds like a place to have hot tea.  She served one I actually liked but I have no clue of the name or why I’d have the occasion to drink it again.  Maybe come December I might feel differently.

I started collecting vintage plates, cups and saucers a few years ago thinking maybe one day one of my girls would like a bridal shower with a vintage theme.  At least that’s what I tell myself when I buy another set.  They seem too pretty to pass up.

For my Mother’s Day tea party it was fun to mix and match the teacups and saucers with my vintage plates.  It was like playing with paper dolls when I was young.  This dress with these shoes.  This cup with this plate.  I could play for hours.

Tea Party Menu

There are no steaks with giant plops of potatoes.  Nope.  Tea parties need a lady like menu.  I gave a quick thought to crustless cucumber or pimento cheese (yuck and double yuck) sandwiches but you can’t look like a lady when you are stuffing 6 triangles in your mouth.  Seriously, why is it that tee-niny sandwiches don’t fill you up?  I don’t get it.  I can’t imagine a few slices of crust is the answer.

Anyway, instead of wasting bread, and your reputation, why not scoop?  The teacups are perfect to use as bowls.  They hold the store bought savory chicken salad and the saucers are perfect for the crackers and apple slices.  Now this is the makings of a grand party.

Did you know that if you score lemons and slice them, they come out looking like flowers?  How cute is that?  And if you’d like the tutorial for the lemon slice flowers, click here.  They’re easy peasy lemons squeezy!

So after looking at all these colorful photos with the cutest china in the world, are you ready to sit at the table with me?  Yay!

I’m also serving a spring mix salad, carrots, broccoli (with Ranch dressing of course), 3 kinds of cheese, a pretzel type Chex mix for the salty palate and cupcakes, chocolate croissants, lemon poppy seed scones and grapes for a little sweetness.  It may sound like a hodge podge of delights but they are foods this mom likes. πŸ˜‰

Doesn’t that sound better than hot tea and teeny tiny sandwiches?  It does to me.  When Mom arrives, she’s going to ask, where’s the Big Red and fried chicken?  Sorry mom, today is all about hiding our crazy and acting like ladies as best we can.  πŸ˜‰

I was just thinking that I wish I had a ginormous table for anyone who wants to come sit with me.  I’d love to hear all about your mom and your kids, your youth and growing up.  What a day that would be!

Enjoy Friends!

Now, this is one party that I would love to attend! I adore your collection of cups and I am SO impressed with your lemon slice flowers. Shazam!

Yay Laura, let’s have a tea party! I’ll even cut more lemon flowers. πŸ˜‰

Your tea party looks very pretty. I have many tea cups from both grandmothers and some from my mom. They had pretty collections and I use them in different ways

I’m odd I love cucumber sandwiches at tea. I totally get the hot tea when it’s hot outside though. My grandfather would drink hot coffee outside during hot summer days. I used ask how he could. He’d say the heat of the coffee kept him cool. Still don’t believe the theory.

Enjoy the start to your week and Mother’s day.

I see people drink coffee during hot days as well. I surely don’t understand that. One of these days I’m going to England and I’ll for sure have the hot tea with them! LOL. Thanks for the visit Cindy.

  3. May 6, 2019 / 7:56 am

Hi Cindy, I’m like you ~ I can drink sweet iced tea all day long, but hot tea is reserved only for a cold winter day. Love the idea of using the tea cups as bowls for your treats. I love the β€œflower” lemons. Have a Happy Mother’s Day.

    • May 6, 2019 / 10:13 am

Thank you Carol. We should get together again soon and I’ll bring some good ol’ iced tea!

  4. May 6, 2019 / 8:07 am

Cindy, This is precious. I didn’t think much of cucumber or other tiny sandwiches until tea time in England. They know how to do tea! I bet you had a great time at Barbaras. How fun. Your tablescape and food selection is fabulous. I love your vintage china collection. Too cute.

    • May 6, 2019 / 10:22 am

Thank you Katie. One day I’m getting to England and no matter what they do or drink, I’m doing it! I can always inconspicuously spit it into my lacy handkerchief. πŸ˜‰ LOL

    • May 6, 2019 / 10:28 am

Thank you Michelle. I appreciate that. I do like to use things in different ways. Hop you have a wonderful week.

Cindy, your table looks amazing. I love the tip about cutting the lemon’s peel before slicing. How pretty is that for a garnish? Hope you have a wonderful Mother’s Day!

    • May 6, 2019 / 10:31 am

Thank you Terrie. The lemons do make a fun garnish. Glad you saw something new today. Have a great day!

  6. May 6, 2019 / 10:45 am

What a creative way to use your pretty teacups and saucers! I may just copy your idea and I would serve up that yummy chicken salad with some sweet tea or lemonade! I am not a big hot tea fan, so I would be happy to join you at your lovely table! I agree with you about pimento cheese, even though that is heresy in the South, but I do love a little cucumber sandwich!

    • May 6, 2019 / 12:23 pm

Well come on over Chloe! I’ll make you a little cucumber sammie any day and enjoy our nice ice-cold sweet tea!

My mom is gone but she had about 5 sets of dishes and lots of tea cups and saucers, i do miss her. I love your idea cause i love chicken salad, cheese and fruit, thanks and have a wonderful time with your mom. My family is coming and i love family time.

    • May 6, 2019 / 2:23 pm

I remember being young and not caring about family time. That’s when I was a naive girl who cared only about herself. Not a proud time but honest. Now I cherish family time. Hope yours is fabulous. Enjoy!

Love your savory tea party!! I actually liked the way how you used tea cups and saucers! Clever idea!! My tea party was with iced tea… it’s too hot here too (except today, it’s chilly, I could use a warm cuppa!)

    • May 6, 2019 / 2:25 pm

Thank you Angelina. I love iced sweet tea too and could have it even if it’s 20 degrees outside. Thanks for visiting!

  9. May 6, 2019 / 2:15 pm

Hi Cindy, your menu sounds so delicious! I’m a lover of hot tea, but I agree, for me it’s not for the summer. Your collection of vintage cups, saucers, and plates are perfect. I hope your girls will enjoy them as much as you. Have a Happy Mother’s Day!

    • May 6, 2019 / 2:26 pm

Thank you Debra. I hope they love the collection too. I hope they want anything of mine as they get older. That would make me smile. Glad you liked it.

  10. May 6, 2019 / 2:26 pm

Carol what a splendid idea! I love this idea for Mother’s Day! I hope you have a lovely one!

Thank you Kelly. Glad you like the idea. Hope you enjoy your week.

  11. May 6, 2019 / 2:26 pm

Your girly table is so pretty! I love the pink and all the pretty china! I am a fan of both iced and hot tea. Usually, I drink my hot tea in the morning and iced during the day. Although years ago, my husband and I went to afternoon tea at our hotel in Barbados. You would think hot tea on a tropical island wouldn’t make sense but I guess the shade and island breezes made it work!

Thank you Shelley. An island breeze with tea sounds fantastic! I just might conform if I had those surroundings. Glad you could visit today.

Cindy, Cindy, Cindy — Thank you soooo much for brightening my day. I NEEDED a laugh as it is my 19th anniversary. WTH? Forget the tea, I’m needing about a gallon of vodka or something, maybe in the form of an IV or something! πŸ˜‰ Your table is beautiful and china lovely and love the tips about your food! Would love to sit down in a cool room at your cool table and enjoy great food and convo!! You go girl! And BTW — thanks for the McKinney info — we enjoyed and even survived the storm. Love your blog!

    • May 6, 2019 / 3:36 pm

Oh Penny I’m so glad to hear you liked McKinney! Congratulations on the anniversary too. That’s a milestone! Would love to have you at my table any time. Big hugs new friend. ❀️

We loved McKinney on girlfriends weekend. Had great time in the downtown and the Art Show. Not so much on the extreme weather that Saturday and felt bad for the artists, but hopefully we will be able to come back because we LOVED it and had great time. Thanks!!

    • May 6, 2019 / 5:57 pm

Yeah, our weather around here can get extreme and quite exciting at times. Glad everyone was ok and still loved it. Next time you’re down, hit me up and maybe I can join y’all! πŸ˜‰

You always make me giggle! Love your menu… and I’m thinking shoving 6 crackers in my mouth is just about the same as 6 finger sandwiches! LOL! πŸ˜‰

    • May 6, 2019 / 5:59 pm

I can definitely say 6 crackers doesn’t look the same as shoving 6 triangle sandwiches in. LOL. Glad I could make you smile today Julie. πŸ˜‰

What a fun idea to serve treats in pretty tea cups –now why didn’t I think of that?! Happy to be joining you for the tea party hop this week. Blessings, Cecilia @My Thrift Store Addiction

Oh Cindy this post is just so fun and beautiful! You crack me up as usual, and you have created a beautiful and creative tablescape. Love the idea of using the teacups as mini-bowls. Like you, I could play around mixing and matching vintage teacups all day.

I hope you have a wonderful “Mom’s Day” with all the love and attention you deserve!

Thank you so much for joining the hop. Now pour yourself a nice glass of iced tea and enjoy the snacks!

Your tea party without the tea is so much fun! As a woman currently going through the roller coaster ride which is perimenopause, I totally get what you said about no hot tea at this time of year! love all the different tasty treats on the menu. The mixed and matched tea sets are wonderful eye candy. You put a lot of time, effort and love into your tea party and it shows!

    • May 7, 2019 / 2:34 pm

Thank you Michelle. And nope, I don’t need anything hot in my already hot mama self. πŸ˜‚

  18. May 7, 2019 / 7:40 am

  22. May 7, 2019 / 10:23 pm

    Cindy,
Of course, you can be counted on to add a little levity to a Tea Party. 🀣And we think alike… no hot tea in Texas except in the dead of winter. Iced tea is our tea. Come on over, and we will enjoy a glass.

    Judith

    • May 7, 2019 / 10:32 pm

Yes Judith! One day I’m getting to your home and staying all dang day! 😁

  23. May 13, 2019 / 4:46 pm

I’m a week late to this party:( It was a family-stuff kinda week. I think your menu sounds wonderful-especially those chocolate croissants! And those lemon slices are awesome; but I need more details than just “score and slice”. Score with what? Maybe you could do a whole blog post for me on how to make pretty flowers out of lemon slices. That pic of the beautiful glass is my favorite! Course, your teacups are gorgeous, too. Always love hopping over and seeing what you’re up to, bestie!

    • May 13, 2019 / 7:37 pm

Yes my new Bestie! That’s a great idea about the lemon slices! I’m terrible about assuming people know that stuff! And I laughed out loud when you said bestie! That’s now what Lora β€œB” stands for… Bestie! πŸ˜‚

  24. May 15, 2019 / 12:44 pm

Hi Cindy! I was over late last week but never finished reading… Thank you for the shout out, I appreciate it!!! The tea we had at my tea was just ordinary loose-leaf English Breakfast by Twinings. Love your tea party and yes, it DOESN’T MATTER what’s in the cup but what’s in your heart and on the table… πŸ™‚

Hope your mom had a special day with you!!! Your table setting is lovely… <3
    Many hugs,
    Barb πŸ™‚

Exactly! LOL. Give me all the yummy treats, place settings and fabulous conversation and laughs. That’s my kind of tea party. Thank you Susan.
